Scope

The Rare Earth Research Conferences have historically rotated sites within North America, Europe, and the Pacific Rim on an annual basis. These have been combined recently with the International Conference on the f-Elements (Geneva, 2003), and the Rare Earth Conference in Nara, Japan, in November, 2004. The conference in Keystone, Colorado, in June, 2005, will be the 24th Rare Earth Research Conference in North America. This conference also recognizes the accomplishments of internationally-recognized scientists in rare-earth chemistry and physics with the presentation of the Spedding Award. This year, the 11 th Spedding Award will be presented at the conference. This prestigious award is given in recognition of excellence and achievement in research centered on the science and technology of rare earths. The Award winner will be asked to present a seminar on the highlights of their work at the meeting. Previous award winners include:

1st- W.E. Wallace (U.S.) Rare Earth Intermetallics and Hydrides, Nitrides
2nd- Georg Busch (Switz.) Chemistry and Physics of Semiconductors
3rd- S. Legvold and W. Koehler (U.S.) Magnetic Properties of Rare Earth Metals
4th- A. Mackintosh and H. Bjerrum Moeller (Denmark) Foundations of Rare Earth Magnetism
5th- B.R. Judd (U.S.) Rare Earth Spectroscopy
6th- Karl A. Gschneidner, Jr. (U.S.) Rare Earth Materials
7th- Leroy Eyring (U.S.) Thermodynamics and Structures of Oxides
8th- Gregory Choppin (U.S.) Factors in Lanthanide (III) Complexation
9th- M. Brian Maple (U.S.) Superconductivity and Magnetism
10th- Lynn A. Boatner (U.S.) Rare Earth Spectroscopy

The award consists of a medal mounted on a plaque and a monetary sum of $1,000, sponsored by Bracco Research USA Inc . The award organizer is Dr. Susan Kauzlarich, Chair of the 23 rd RERC in 2001.

The conference celebrates research in the rare-earth elements, including the 4f and 5f groups. Plenary lecturers will present their views on exciting new topics. The conference sessions will run in parallel following each plenary lecture. A list of sessions can be found in the Program section of this web site. The traditional form of communication at this meeting is through poster presentations with a few selected invited oral presentations. Oral presentations are invited by the session chairs. A few opportunities are available in the schedule to make brief oral presentations in each session. Traditionally, session chairs and conference organizers do not give oral presentations.

Abstracts for all papers (oral and poster) may be submitted electronically through our Abstract Submission link. Presentations may not be given at the conference without an approved abstract. A Conference Proceedings will be published (journal to be determined). Papers for the proceedings will be refereed by the editorial staff. Only papers presented by one of the co-authors in person at the conference will be accepted into the proceedings.

Important Dates

Early Registration - March 1, 2005
Abstracts Due - March 1, 2005
Final Program Available - April 1, 2005
Registration for the Conference: May 26, 2005 (Later registration will cost $775 and space is not guaranteed.)
Manuscripts Due - Tentatively June 1, 2005
Conference Dates - June 26-30, 2005

Manuscript Note: author instructions may be found at the web site: http://authors.elsevier.com/. Submitted papers will be limited to 4 printed journal pages.

Proceedings

A Proceedings journal publication will be in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds. You should note that there is a 4-page published page limit, including figures, for all submitted papers. If you plan to submit a manuscript, you should follow the Guide for Authors of JOURNAL OF ALLOYS AND COMPOUNDS (JAC):

http://authors.elsevier.com/JournalDetail.html?PubID=522468&Precis=DESC
Submit your manuscript to your assigned RERC editor electronically as a SINGLE attachment to an e-mail message, preferably as a Microsoft WORD document. Embed figures and tables within the document; do not send them as separate files. An Adobe ACROBAT PDF file (version 5.0 or 6.0, not 7!) is also acceptable. The file size should be no larger than 2 MB. Your editorial assignment will be sent to you after April 18, 2005.

If JAC needs high-resolution files later, you can provide them with the final version. Estimate the length of your manuscript to ensure that it is not longer than 4 JAC pages (6 pages if invited oral, 8 pages if plenary). A single page of JAC text corresponds to approximately 900 words. Include tables, figures, and references in your page estimate!

The deadline for manuscript submission is June 1. In your transmittal message, state the manuscript authors and title, state your abstract number, list the number of estimated JAC pages, and state that the manuscript is submitted to the 24th RERC. Include your e-mail, telephone, fax, and POSTAL address in your message and on the first page of the manuscript.

Each manuscript must correspond to one accepted RERC abstract. Manuscripts will be considered for publication only if the paper is actually presented at the RERC by an author who is registered for and present at the RERC.
