“The function of the university is not
simply to teach bread-winning, or to furnish teachers for the
public schools or to be a centre of polite society; it is, above
all, to be the organ of that fine adjustment between real life
and the growing knowledge of life, an adjustment which forms
the secret of civilization.” –W.E.B. DuBois (1903)
Welcome to the Center for Applied Studies in American Ethnicity (CASAE). CASAE offers both a Minor in Ethnic Studies and an Ethnic Studies interdepartmental Liberal Arts Major. The Minor and Major in accordance with the philosophy that studying and understanding
ethnicity can deepen appreciation of the various ethnic heritages,
the patterns of interaction among those ethnic traditions, and
the nature or problems suffered because of abuses and misunderstandings
about ethnic and perceived racial identities.
The Ethnic Studies
Program is dedicated to meeting the educational and research needs
of students and faculty interested in issues such as inclusive
histories, identity formation, cultural practices and beliefs,
and historical representations of racial and ethnic groups. The
program is designed to provide an instructional and resource base
for future professionals working in fields where an understanding
of ethnicity will enhance their professional effectiveness.
