In addition to continuing work in a primary studio concentration the curriculum requires other art and art-related fields, both studio and academic, as well as electives outside the department. A distinctive characteristic of this M.F.A. program is the attempt to develop the student's individuality by having a balance between guidance and freedom, between competence in accepted forms and techniques in art and forward-looking, creative innovations.

This program also attempts to define a balance between a structure appropriate to the degree and opportunities for significant student choices. The program provides for a substantial amount of work in the student's area of specialization. Some academic study in related and supporting fields is specified in the belief that both technical and humanistic knowledge are significant in the artist's growth. Courses taken to meet prerequisites for advanced courses are not counted as a part of the 60 required credits.

The M.F.A. is a terminal degree for studio arts and its goal is a professional level of performance
