Tree Fruit Cropping and Pest Management
- Develop and evaluate options to enhance tree fruit cropping reliability (Harold Larsen).
- Evaluate computerized tree fruit crop and pest management models for integrated crop management and adapt for use under Colorado conditions, including collection of weather data and application of this collected data to pest and crop model use (Harold Larsen).
- Examine the causes of and corrective measures for chlorosis in established crops in western Colorado (e.g., the yellow peach tree syndrome) (Ron Godin).
- Evaluate tree fruit disease control options and adapt them for use under Colorado conditions (Harold Larsen).
- Evaluate control options for replant problems of tree fruits and adapt for use under Colorado conditions (Harold Larsen).
Pest Management
- Survey for the presence of several destructive insect pests such as plum curculio, western cherry fruit fly, khapra beetle, Japanese beetle, glassy winged sharpshooter and others (Rick Zimmerman).
- Survey of insect and disease populations in pepper species (Rick Zimmerman).
- Evaluation of insecticides on onion thrips populations (Rick Zimmerman in cooperation with Bob Hammon, CSU Cooperative Extension).
- Survey of European corn borer populations and pest pressure in commercial sweet corn fields in Western Colorado (Rick Zimmerman).
Agronomy
- Evaluate production potential of varieties of alfalfa, corn, wheat, and pinto beans in western Colorado (Calvin Pearson).
- Evaluate potential of cropping practice/management options (e.g., polyacrylamide hydrogel used alone or with fertilizer, etc.) for field crops (e.g., wheat & corn) (Calvin Pearson).
Forages
- Evaluate various annual and perennial forage species for yield and forage quality under irrigation, limited irrigation, and dryland conditions for hay and/or grazing (Joe Brummer).
- Evaluate techniques for interseeding grasses and legumes into existing stands of perennial forages to improve yield, forage quality, and/or extend stand life (Joe Brummer).
- Evaluate various management practices for improving forage production such as fertilization, irrigation, and aeration/ripping (Joe Brummer).
Phytoremediation
- Prepare and submit a grant proposal for use of hybrid poplar and selected native plants for environmental mitigation at the Atlas Mill Tailings waste pile near Moab, Utah (Calvin Pearson).
