International Studies Concentration
Asian Studies Option |
The Asian Studies option emphasizes the interdisciplinary study of Asian cultures and societies. Courses in this option combine history, religion/philosophy, literature, art, political science, and language skills to give you the tools to understand and interpret Asia's past and present. Geographical areas of study include West Asia ("Middle East"), South Asia (Indian Subcontinent), Southeast Asia, Central Asia, East Asia (China, Korea, Japan), and the Pacific Islands.
Within this option the student completes at least three years of a single Asian language, one semester of geography, two designated courses in Asian history, and eight courses from three "Tracks," "The History and Politics of Asia" (Track I), "The Thought and Culture of Asia" (Track II), and “International Studies” (Track III). Presently, Japanese and Chinese are offered at Colorado State University, but other languages could be studied in summer programs with approval of your advisor for this major.
Asian Studies Option: (42 – 56 credits)
A. Complete through the third year of an Asian language: (3 – 16 credits):
Choices: Chinese, Japanese, or substitution with advisor approval.

To take L200 you will need to complete a pre-requisite class or test into the class.
B. Complete Introduction to Geography: GR100 (3 credits):
C. Complete two courses in Asian history (6 credits):
Choose from: HIST 120 Asian Civilizations I or HIST 121 Asian Civilizations II
AND one of the following:
HIST 120 Asian Civilizations I, HIST 121 Asian Civilizations II, HIST 430 Ancient Near East,
HIST 434 Crusades in the Near East, HIST 438 The Modern Middle East,
HIST 440 Modern South Asia or HIST 451 Medieval China and Central Asia.
May not be used here and in Track one.
D. Complete classes from three Tracks (24 credits):
Must include *6 credits minimum from track 1 & 2 AND *3 credits minimum from track 3. Minimum of 3 different prefixes. 18 credits must be upper division. Many of these classes have prerequisites so be sure to check the course list by visiting http://www.colostate.edu/Programs/in.

F. Prerequisites & Electives (34–47 credits): 120 TOTAL CREDITS ARE REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION. The number of electives you need varies according to your program of study.
Be Aware of this! => 42 upper division credits required for graduation, 30 of which must be in residence at CSU or (with prior approval) in a program under CSU jurisdiction. Upper division credits within the Options vary widely depending on choices of Track courses.
