About the Forest Biomass Supply Study:
This study is an ongoing effort to determine the volume, type, and distribution of forest biomass generated on a parcel level throughout the state of Colorado. The data were compiled within ArcGIS, a Geographical Information System (GIS) program to graphically display where they exist. Presenting the data using a GIS format creates a clear visual representation of wood supply distribution for each county. The GIS database was developed from many sources, including data provided by the U.S. Forest Service and Colorado State Forest Service, and data from agricultural tax credit records and county land offices. The database summarizes forest biomass generation in terms of harvested acres, volumes, and product type removed. Products were typically in the form of fuelwood, chips, posts, and small logs. Data were converted into a format compatible with ArcGISTM, thus contained in one easily understood database.
The maps and summaries which you will see on this website have been simplified to give the user a general view of forest treatment practices and probable locations of forest biomass being generated. The GIS layers and associated databases are not downloadable at this time, although a summary of the currently available biomass production for each county has been included on each county map.
Disclaimer Regarding Maps and Data:
The purpose of these web page maps created for the ongoing Forest Biomass Study are to give the user a general understanding of where forest treatments are being conducted which have produced or will potentially produce forest biomass. The data was collected from 2002 to 2006 from various sources and across ownership boundaries (Private, County, State, Federal). The study is unbiased, therefore gives no intentional preference to any agency or land manager.
All data collected and mapped is considered to be "best available data" at the time of acquisition.
This study is ongoing and updates to maps will be a continuous effort.
The GIS layers and associated databases are not downloadable at this time, although a brief summary of the currently known biomass production for each county has been included for each county map.
Exact locations and managers of forest treatments are intentionally not included in the summary to protect landowner privacy.
