Living Off Campus:

Before you move in, you might want to:

* Check to make sure the entry door has a deadbolt lock and a peephole.

* Check the locks on the windows...do they work?

* Find out the landlord's policy on keys...who has access to yours?

* Check around the exterior to make sure the shrubbery is trimmed.

* Ask about safety...how does the landlord notify you of crime in the area?

* Visit your apartment/house in the evening...is the parking lot well lit?

After you move in, consider:

* Listing only initials and last name on the mailbox.

* Avoiding use of your name on your answering machine, especially if you live alone.

* Locking doors and windows at all times, even when home, or stepping out to the mailbox, laundry room, or to exercise, etc.

* Not opening the door unless you know who is on the other side.

* Not leaving a key under a doormat or flower pot, or in the mailbox or the ignition of your parked car. Burglars know all of the hiding places.

* Being wary of door-to-door sales people.

* Not relying on window or door screens to keep anything out except insects.

* Not leaving your car unlocked in front of the apartment/house.

Keeping your garage door closed, whether you are home or not.

Having your papers picked up or stopping delivery, if you go away for a few days.

*Limited compilation of suggestions from various safety Web sites and literature on the subject. For more information, contact your local law enforcement agency's crime prevention unit.
