Interwest EAC can provide professional development, technical assistance, and
information dissemination.
01.Assistance in identifying discriminatory actions as
they affect students.
02.Assistance for school district in addressing issues
related to CONFLICT
03.Development of strategies and programs for recruiting
and retaining women and minority staff.
04.Development of strategies to prevent in school
resegregation.
05.Assistance in the development and successful
implementation of a desegregation plan.
06.Examination of administrative structures, procedures,
and policies as possible sources for discrimination on the basis of race,
gender, and national origin.
07.Assistance with integrating equity into the strategic
planning process.
08.Development of strategies/programs for recruiting
special education teachers.
09.Development of strategies/programs for recruiting
English as a Second Language (ESL)/bilingual teachers.
10.Assistance in the integration of equity into the
school improvement process.
11.Assistance in the evaluation of inequitable student
outcomes based on the desegregation of data by race, gender, and national
origin.
12.Assistance in the assessment of equity provisions
into curriculum, assessments, instructional outcomes, standards, policies,
and practices of the district.
B. Addressing strategies for coping with student
diversity concerns:
01.Assistance in the development of culturally diverse
student leadership skills.
02.Development of strategies and identification of
programs to meet the needs of "students in need of intervention"
(dropout, suspension, teenage pregnancy, biracial students...).
03.Assessment of discipline policies and procedures for
equity.
04.Examination of procedures and policies for bias in
student assignment to courses, including talented and gifted programs, by
race, gender, or national origin.
05.Assistance in the improvement of strategies to
increase participation of girls and minority students in math and science
courses, technology and nontraditional fields.
06.Assistance in increasing awareness of available
substance abuse prevention programs.
07.Assessment of extracurricular activities (sports,
clubs, etc.) for discrimination on the basis of race, gender, or national
origin.
08.Development of speaking, reading, listening, and
writing English skills for Limited English Proficient (LEP) students.
09.Provision of multicultural awareness training,
fostering respect of national origin, gender, and racial identities of
others without stereotyping.
10.Assistance in the expansion of nontraditional
opportunities in vocational education.
11.Student training in awareness and prevention of
sexual harassment.
12.Provision of student training to increase positive
self-esteem.
13.Assistance in the development of instructional
strategies which address Native American students.
14.Training in the alternative assessments for student
placement in special education or LEP.
15.Training in the alternative discipline strategies for
special education students.
16.Provision of awareness training for students
addressing sexual orientation issues in the school.
C. Evaluating and developing equity based
curriculum/materials:
01.Increase awareness of available instruments for
assessing bias in curriculum materials, audiovisual and computer software
resources for race, gender, and national origin.
02.Assistance in the development of a
multicultural/nonsexist curriculum.
03.Provision of awareness and training for effective
approaches to ESL/Bilingual programs, sheltered English programs, etc.
D. Facilitating family/community involvement in
education:
01.Assistance in the development of programs fostering
parent(s) (or guardian) involvement and support.
02.Assistance for administrators in developing
successful community partnerships.
03.Assistance in developing collaboration efforts with
community members to provide more effective school safety programs and
strategies.
04.Assistance in the development of strategies for
magnet and/or charter school marketing and recruitment.
05.Assistance to schools for the development of programs
which provide parental education (i.e. ESL, parenting skills, GED).
06.Assistance in the development of support services for
parents of students in need (i.e. sexual orientation, youth in crisis,
victims of violence).
E. Providing professional development in equitable
educational practices for school personnel:
01.Development of skills in classroom management
techniques within a diverse classroom setting.
02.Increase teacher awareness of diverse family
structures and cultures.
03.Identification of effective and equitable discipline
techniques.
04.Development of skills to teach about dynamics of
prejudice, stereotyping and racism.
05.Development of skills to use various instructional
strategies and assessment procedures sensitive to cultural and linguistic
variation.
06.Identification of strategies in implementing
effective school models.
07.Assistance for teachers and school counselors in the
identification and use of instruments for the assessment of Limited English
Proficiency (LEP) students.
08.Identification of innovative conflict resolution
programs.
09.Identification of strategies and programs available
for coping with the increasing violence in schools.
10.Identification of strategies and programs available
for coping with the increasing "gang activities" in schools.
11.Increase teacher awareness of language acquisition
processes and strategies for teaching LEP students.
12.Provision of training for bilingual aides, bilingual
tutors, and bilingual specialists in the district.
13.Preparation of teachers for dealing with diversity
within a multicultural classroom setting through awareness of diverse
learning styles, and diverse teaching styles.
14.Provision of training on sexual harassment issues for
school personnel.
15.Increase awareness of equitable student/teacher
interaction patterns.
16.Provision/development of training of trainers in
identified areas.
17.Provision of training for teachers/teacher's aides in
more effective interaction.
18.Increase awareness of needs of biracial students.
19.Training for teachers in technology equity issues.
20.Identification of gender bias in instructional
practices, assessment, and classroom interaction.
F. Enhancing coordination/collaboration efforts:
01.Provide meeting opportunities to foster dialogue and
enhance knowledge of local, region, and national technical assistance
providers.
02.Identification of federal, state, and other resources
to assist in coping with desegregation related concerns.
03.Assistance in coordinating cooperative efforts
between various local, state, regional, and federal agencies.
04.Assistance in the development of proposal writing
skills (i.e. magnet school, charter school, Title VII Bilingual
applications....).
05.Provision of technical assistance to help integrate
federal, state, and local educational programs more effectively.
06.Serve as a liaison for equity issues with local,
regional, state, and national educational agencies.
G. Disseminating equity resources and information:
01.Identification and dissemination of information about
promising "best practices" related to equity in education.
02.Access to free multicultural/nonsexist materials
(books, videos, posters, games) from the Interwest Equity
Assistance Center
03.Identification of career planning resources that support
choices in career planning, particulary in the fields of math, science,
technology, vocational, and nontraditional fields.
04.Identification of reports and publications about
effective comprehensive school reform designs.
05.Provision of resources on languages other than
English for LEP students.
06.Provision of a review of educational options offered
to students to meet their diverse individual needs (magnet, alternative,
schools of choice, etc.)
07.Provision of training resources to supplement staff
expertise for state and local educational agencies (i.e. equity update
information, training in new equity programs, awareness of sources of
funding for equity issues).
