Halt Certified Seed

*Breeding History

Halt Certified Wheat was developed by Colorado State University and released in 1994. Ownership was transferred to the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation in 1995. Halt was derived from crosses between a resistant Russian line and the adapted wheats Sumner and TAM 107.

*Halt Certified Wheat is the only winter wheat resistant to the Russian wheat aphid. It is a semi-dwarf. White chaffed cultivar equal in height to Yuma and TAM 107. Halt is slightly earlier than TAM 107 and two days earlier than Yuma. It has excellent straw strength. Halt is moderately susceptible to prevalent races of leaf rust, resistant races of stem rust and moderately resistant to wheat streak mosaic virus.
*Yield Performance

Halt Certified Wheat has been tested in Colorado nurseries since 1991, and in five states of the Southern Regional Performance Nursery in 1994. Dryland tests (1993-95) from the Colorado Variety Trial indicated that Halt yielded 97, 100 and 91 percent of Tam 107, Lamar and Yuma, respectively. The test weight of Halt was two percent lower than TAM 107.
*Quality Characteristics

Halt Certified Wheat is a hard red winter wheat with wheat and flour protein content similar to Lamar. Halt has strong mixing characteristics as determined by the mixograph. In Colorado and regional milling and baking tests, Halt has been superior in overall bread-making qualities to Lamar, Yuma and Tam 107.
*Plant Variety Protection

Halt Certified Wheat is protected under the Plant Variety Protection Act and can only be sold as a class of Certified seed. Protection of Halt Certified Wheat Seed will be enforced. "Halt" is owned by the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation (CWRF), inc., and may not be distributed without the permission of CWRF of licensed seed growers.
