The creators of this agreement believe that "Universities educate most of the people who develop and manage society's institutions. For this reason, universities bear profound responsibilities to increase the awareness, knowledge, technologies, and tools to create an environmentally sustainable future."
To date, the Talloires Declaration has been signed by more than 300 university presidents and chancellors at institutions in over 40 countries across five continents.
Colorado State and the Declaration
Colorado State University signed the Declaration in 2001, committing to establish programs in all major disciplines to teach about the environment, population, and sustainable development.
CSU has also established a Talloires Committee, created to ensure that the University continues to comply with the Declaration's ten-point action plan for incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy in teaching, research, operations and outreach.
