ISP in Information Science & Technology

Who is the program designed for?

The ISP in Information Science & Technology was created for students who would like to take a series of courses that are equivalent to a minor program of study in Information Technology. These courses provide a broad foundation of study in this field that will complement the student's major program and enhance post-graduate employment prospects. Students should have a solid foundation of preparation in mathematics and basic computer skills prior to beginning the program.

The program is not intended for students who are majoring in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Journalism & Technical Communication as these programs provide enhanced preparation for entry into specific IT-related professions.

How do I enroll in the program?

AFTER completing the program prerequisite course (either CIS 150 or CS 110), students should see Dr. Pete Seel in the Department of Journalism & Technical Communication in Clark Building room C-242 to complete an application for the program. The application is very concise and takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

How do I gain admission into program courses that are presently restricted to majors in IT departments?

Each semester a list of students formally enrolled in the program will be circulated to all departments offering required and elective courses. Students on the ISP list will be able to obtain admission over-rides into these classes -- within course enrollment limits. Please see the academic advisor for the department offering the course for admission. Students will still have to meet prerequisite requirements for certain courses in the program. Contact Professor Seel at the address below if you have difficulty getting into a course.

Where is the Web site for the program?

How do I complete the program?

The ISP in IS&T requires the completion of three required courses and four electives for a total of 21 credits (see the list on the homepage). Once a student has finished all the course requirements for the program, they should return to see Dr. Seel and sign the completion form. He will confirm the course grades and notify the Registrar of your satisfactory completion of the program.

What will appear on my transcript?

Your CSU transcript will include the notation that you have completed the "Interdisciplinary Studies Program in Information Science & Technology." Anyone requesting your official transcript will be able to see this notation. It is not a "minor" program of study, and will not appear on your CSU diploma.

What can I do with the knowledge gained in the program?

The ISP in IS&T will provide each student with computer-related knowledge (including basic programming skills) that can be utilized in a wide variety of professions. Students will also understand the effects of information technology on global communication and world cultures. Since almost all contemporary professions that require a college degree are reliant to varying degrees on the use of information technology, this knowledge can be applied on a daily basis after graduation.
