Effective February
27, 2003, CSU Telecommunications enabled Caller ID service
on all Residence Hall and Apartment phone lines at Colorado State
University. Caller ID information now will appear on your
phone's Caller ID display. There is no additional charge for this
service.
If you purchase Caller
ID equipment, it will work as soon as you plug it in. Caller ID
equipment available at retail stores will work, as Telecommunications
uses an industry-standard DMS-100 telephone switching system to
serve the University.
If you have optional
Call Waiting service, Caller ID will be transmitted after
the first Call Waiting tone, but will display only on newer "Call
Waiting Caller ID" phones. (You may notice a short "chirp"
at the end of the Call Waiting tone. This is a signal sent by
the central office to determine whether your phone supports Call
Waiting Caller ID.)
If you have optional
Voice Mail service, a new Visual Message Waiting Indicator
signal is being sent to your phone when someone leaves you Voice
Mail. In addition to the normal stutter dial tone indication,
you would see a message waiting light or icon displayed -- only
if your phone is equipped with a Visual Message Waiting Indicator.
(Alternatively, it may be called a CLASS* Message Waiting Indicator.)
To block your number
and name from appearing on someone else's Caller ID, dial
*67 plus the number you are calling (for example, *67 + 5-1234,
or *67 + 8-234-5678). Your call will appear as ANONYMOUS or PRIVATE
on the called party's Caller ID display for this call only. (Please
note that anonymous calls still can be traced by the called party,
if they hang up and dial a new call to *57 -- the Call Trace Code.)
To prevent anonymous
callers from ringing your phone, dial *77. A recorded announcement
will say, "Your Call Screen service is now on." Thereafter,
every anonymous call to your phone will be blocked by an announcement
that says, "The phone you are calling does not accept anonymous
calls from phones which block their Caller ID. To call this phone,
you must redial your call by dialing *82 plus the called number.
For only this call, your name and number will be displayed."
(Please note that you still will receive calls from UNKNOWN or
OUT OF AREA off-campus callers. Technically, we are unable to
block these calls.)
To allow anonymous
callers to ring your phone, dial *87. A recorded announcement
will say, "Your Call Screen service is now off."
Questions may be directed
to CSU Telecommunications at (970) 491-5881.
*CLASS is
the acronym for Custom Local Area Signaling Services, a suite
of telecommunications industry technologies that use the calling
phone number to enable additional features such as Caller ID,
Anonymous Call Rejection, and *57 Call Trace.
