Catherine Ortega, Principal Investigator of the grazing study, stands in a riparian pasture that was ungrazed for the brief breeding season of songbirds.

Cowbirds prefer short grass and are closely associated with cattle because they pick up insects that cattle stir up.  Taking cattle out of pastures can reduce the abundance of cowbirds, which reduces the incidence of cowbird parasitism and increases reproductive success for songbirds.
