TECHNICAL TRAINING UPDATE
Category: Current status and activity
The National Center for Vehicle Emissions Control and Safety
(NCVECS) at Colorado State University offers the technician and
automotive trainer a number of unbiased, research-based courses
related to vehicle inspection programs, vehicle emissions dynamics
under loaded and unloaded conditions and diagnosis/repair
strategies. The "High Impact" training format is utilized in the
classroom and advanced I/M testing laboratory where students
perform transient and steady-state driving tests and advanced
diagnostics.
The NCVECS Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) training series
includes:
-
Two Day Train-the-Trainers Seminar: A two day, in-depth I/M 240
"Train-the-Trainers" course covers I/M 240 testing procedures,
equipment utilized in the diagnostic and repair process and
provides the trainer with a first-line approach to fixing vehicles
that have failed transient tests. In the last three years (1994-1996), NCVECS'
instructors trained 176 public private and industry
automotive instructors, 197 business/industry personnel, 123
government employees regarding the I/M 240 test procedure. This
course utilize NCVECS' "High Impact" training philosophy; i.e.
education and information that the adult student will use almost
immediately upon returning to work. It is designed to allow
instructors to incorporate this information immediately into their
own training programs.
-
Acceleration Simulation Mode (ASM) Workshop: A special two-day
course on
Acceleration Simulation Modes (ASM's) has been created.
This course is research-based and discusses the pro's/con's of
ASM testing and its' implications on the service/repair industry.
It is also designed to meet a void in the vehicle inspection/repair
industry for unbiased I/M training and information. This course
also utilizes NCVECS' "High Impact" training philosophy.
-
Emissions Technician Training: NCVECS offers three, four hour
courses for the in-service repair technician; (1) Enhanced Emissions
Seminar (I/M 240 or ASM), (2) I/M Failure Repair Strategies (I/M 240
or ASM) and (3)
In-field Converter Testing. These courses have been successfully
taught to over 3800 automotive technicians in Colorado, Arizona,
Maryland, Wisconsin and Texas.
Specialized Emissions Training:
- Quality Assurance/Control in Vehicle Emissions Inspection Programs (2
days)
- NOx Failures: Understanding EGR Systems and Functional Testing Issues
(1 1/2 day)
- NOx, HC, and CO Failures: Catalytic Converter and In-field Converter
Testing (1 1/2 day)
- Emissions Control Systems Identification and Detection of Tampering
(3 days)
NCVECS also offers two video tapes; (1) Reading Underhood Engine
Family/Emissions Labels and (2) Effectiveness of EGR, AIS and CAT
on NOx Reductions. (PRICE: $29.95 each plus $4.95 S/H)
NOTE: All courses taught by NCVECS are NOT associated with
equipment manufacturers or lenghty, profit-driven training
programs.
All courses are offered off-site or twice a year on campus in
the Spring and Fall. For more information and/or a training
