Zebra Grass (miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus')
is a versatile, easily grown clump-forming grass that grows well in any well-drained soil,
from sandy to heavy clay. It prefers full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of summer
heat. The foliage is noted for its horizontal, zebra-like yellow banding. Clumps tend to
slowly expand in circumference, but retain their tight clump shape and grow to as much as
8 feet in height. Silvery flower plumes grow another two feet above the foliage and
persist into winter. Foliage should be left standing throughout the winter for visual
interest and to provide protection for the crowns. Cut foliage to the ground in early
spring, just before new shoots appear. No frequently occurring insect or disease
problems have been noted in this plant, although it is susceptible to collapsing in winter
from heavy snows. |
