Zebra Grass (miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus')
is a versatile, easily grown clump-forming grass that grows well in any well-drained soil,
from sandy to heavy clay. It prefers full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of summer
heat. The foliage is noted for its horizontal, zebra-like yellow banding. Clumps tend to
slowly expand in circumference, but retain their tight clump shape and grow to as much as
8 feet in height. Silvery flower plumes grow another two feet above the foliage and
persist into winter. Foliage should be left standing throughout the winter for visual
interest and to provide protection for the crowns. Cut foliage to the ground in early
spring, just before new shoots appear. No frequently occurring insect or disease problems have been noted in this plant, although it is susceptible to collapsing in winter from heavy snows. |

Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) grows
about 3 foot tall and is the shortest of the Bluestem varieties. This grass is adapted to
drier regions and grows in most of the eastern plains.A small, non-spreading,
clump-forming grass with blue-green leaves that turn bronze-red in the fall. Fluffy silver
seed heads are ornamental through winter.Grow in dry to average soil in full sun.Tolerates
heat and humidity easily.This is an excellent short grass for the garden. Use freely in
sunny borders, native plant gardens, naturalized areas, prairies and meadows. Excellent in
massed plantings. Provides food and cover for wildlife.Hardy zones 5-9.
