Based On Life Theatre

Our Mission: To raise awareness on the Colorado State University Campus and in the Fort Collins Community about today’s vital health and social issues, using dramatic performance as our method of education.

An innovative way to promote education, personal responsibility and engage students in active listening.  Based On Life Theatre (BOLT) is a peer theater group addressing many of today’s vital issues.  It is designed to take a message of responsibility and awareness to college students. The group presents in classrooms, residence halls, Greek houses, conferences and public venues.

Performances typically include a series of skits with audience interaction, using the power of peer influence to communicate with students.  Performances can take place in the classroom and be used to assist a lecture.  The performances can serve as an icebreaker to a topic, to initiate students’ thoughts regarding various issues, or as an influence for discussion.  It gives variation to class lectures and creates a greater student interest in the course.  Beyond the stage, BOLT wants to encourage people to be positive influences in their schools and communities.

In a blending of drama, humor and basic information, various issues are highlighted through scenarios typical of college.  A substantial amount of the material presented is original and inspired from the real life experiences and observations of group members.  The length of performances and specific issues addressed are arranged according to the needs and preferences of the requesting party.  One style of performance is called the “strike.”  It can be described as a seemingly spontaneous and provocative outburst or a staged, brief dialog or argument occurring between a BOLT member planted in the audience and other audience members.  The BOLT group is flexible and can perform in a number of situations.

The members of BOLT are selected through an open process on the basis of commitment to the ideals of the program, ability to communicate effectively, and willingness to dedicate their time and energy.  Member participation is voluntary and requires a large commitment of time and energy from each group member.
