E502 Language, Literacy and Learning

Language, Literacy, and Learning begins with an exploration of the nature of literacy in U.S. society, drawing upon historical and current studies and/or theories of literacy. The course then considers, in more detail, the theoretical and practical perspectives on reading and writing skills necessary for academic success. Within the discussion of academic writing, the course also identifies factors--linguistic (bidialectal, bilingual, and ESL), psychological, physical (learning disabilities or physical handicaps), cultural, and educational--that inhabit readers and writers. Finally, the course presents practical curricular solutions to meet basic readers' and writers' needs and specific ways to provide a rich environment for language practice.
