E 370 - American Literature in Cultural Contexts
This course explores special topics in U.S. literature, with particular emphasis on the relationship between literary and cultural texts and their historical and cultural contexts. Topics and approaches will vary according to the professor teaching the course, but the focus will most often include issues such as race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, environment, nation, disability, and species. Critical debates from academic fields such as American studies, literary theory, and cultural studies will often drive discussions and assignments, but the course does not require prior knowledge of these fields. Recent topics include: “Naturalism and the Progressive Era”; “Contemporary American Animality”; “The Literary Essay in the U.S.”; and “The 1970s.” Course descriptions for upcoming semesters can be found in Rambler.
