E210 Beginning Creative Writing

Prerequisite: Any lower level course in literature

Students will be introduced to the essential elements of good writing, focusing on fiction and poetry. This course will define and illustrate, through careful analytical readings and discussion, the elements, forms and techniques of fiction and poetry. Students will practice these elements in their own writing, producing approximately 15-10 pages of revised fiction (short story forms) and several revised poems. Suggested outline:

  1. Fiction
    1. Kinds: Novel, short story, short short story, (sudden fiction, flash fiction), Vignette
    2. Form and Structure, Plot and Story
    3. The language of fiction, Showing and Telling
    4. Character, characterization, development
    5. Fictional time and place
    6. Narrative point-of-view (Speaker and Implied Audience)
    7. Narrative voice
  2. Poetry
    1. Kinds: Lyric, narrative, dramatic, prose poem, ballad
    2. Voice
    3. Diction
    4. imagery and Figurative language
    5. Sound
    6. Rhythm
    7. Rhyme and sound echo
    8. Traditional or received forms
