Registering for Internships

Registering for Graduate Internships

English graduate students may register for E687 Internship. Multiple internships may be taken for credit. Students may register for between 1 and 5 academic credits for each internship, with roughly 40 hours of work for each credit. No more than 6 credits of E687 Internship and E684 Supervised College Teaching may be applied toward the completion of a graduate degree in English, although more credits may appear on a transcript. Prerequisites for the course are enrollment in a Department graduate program and a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. The E687 Registration Form is available online in Portable Document Format.

Internships can be taken with authorized placements within the English Department, as well as with businesses, institutions, and agencies in the following areas:

  • teaching college English
  • composition supervision/administration
  • literary editing
  • teaching ESL
  • ESL adult learning
  • ESL supervision/administration
  • arts administration in literature
  • public education
  • computers and writing
  • writing/editing for specific purposes

Registering for Undergraduate Internships

Junior and senior English majors may register for E487 Internship. The course is designed to provide work experience in jobs requiring extensive use of reading and writing skills. Prerequisites for the course are a 2.5 GPA, written consent of an advisor, and completion of all lower division major requirements and communication skills requirements. Students can enroll for a maximum of 3 credits in the course. The E487 Registration Form is available online in Portable Document Format.

Notes

  1. Although E487 will not fulfill upper division major requirements, the course may count toward second field requirements. Examples: a student pursuing a second field in history interns as an editorial assistant with a historical journal; or a student with a second field in journalism works for an off-campus newspaper.
  2. To receive credit for a winter break (December-January) internship, you must register for E487 in the spring semester. For summer internship credit, you may register for the summer session or for the following fall semester.
