Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences (ERHS)

The Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences at Colorado State University is soliciting applications for a post-doctoral fellow in the field of air pollution epidemiology. This position will support an interdisciplinary project funded by NIH investigating commuter’s exposures and the health effects of traffic-related air pollution. Research will occur under direct supervision of Professor Jennifer Peel and close collaboration with Professors John Volckens (Colorado State University) and Amy Stuart (University of South Florida). The fellow’s research will involve subject recruitment, data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and results dissemination for an ongoing study examining acute, subclinical cardiovascular and respiratory health effects of commuting routes, modes (car, bike), and traffic-related exposures. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in epidemiology or closely-related field with experience in air pollution and human health research. Preference will be given to candidates that have strong data management and analysis skills (including experience with primary data collection, panel studies, and repeated measures designs), experience conducting personal air pollution measurements, experience in GIS, experience conducting subclinical health measurements (including blood pressure, blood draws, pulse wave analysis, exhaled nitric oxide), demonstrated communication skills (written and oral), organizational and time management skills, leadership experience, and the ability to work independently and within collaborative teams. Summary of Positions: The Colorado Natural Heritage Program has temporary field technician positions available. Research Associates are needed to survey for mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. The field technician should expect to camp in developed and/or undeveloped sites. Occasional nights in motels or rented houses within project areas may also be provided. Specific study sites will be in various locations throughout the state. These positions will require extensive travel and long days in the field. These positions may involve properly collecting and preparing specimens for identification when appropriate. The employment dates for these positions will be approximately from May 1, 2013 through October 31, 2013 and will vary depending upon project.
Minimum Qualifications: • B.S. degree in zoology, biology, natural resources, ecology, or related field experience (at least 2 years of field surveys). • Ability to use a dichotomous key to identify animal species required, • Ability to navigate in remote, areas using topographic maps, compass, and GPS required, • Experience collecting quantitative and qualitative field data in remote settings required, • Ability and willingness to navigate using 4WD vehicles and hike off-trail in remote areas over rugged terrain for much of the field season required, and • Ability to work long hours in the field is required.

Job description of the Project Manager position:

The Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) at Colorado State University (CSU) seeks experienced field technicians for summer field work assessing the condition of wetlands throughout the lower South Platte River Basin. All positions require field botany or ecology skills. Knowledge of plant taxonomy and species identification required. Preferred qualifications include experience in wetland ecology, local flora, and familiarity performing field work for long days (10+ hours).
Fieldwork will take place in randomly selected wetlands in urban areas, agricultural areas, and more remote natural areas as part of two wetland condition assessment projects in the lower South Platte River Basin. Standard duties will involve driving and hiking to field sites; in-field plant identification, in-office plant identification with a microscope; detailed completion of field survey forms, landowner interaction; and extensive collection of vegetation, soil, wildlife habitat, and environmental data. Data will be collected using both rapid assessment protocols and more in-depth vegetation surveys.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences: This interdisciplinary department contains over 25 faculty with strong international reputations and a track record of extramural support. Duties: • Assist in the design of interdisciplinary research that may include developmental, anatomical, neurochemical, cell biological, molecular biological and immunological fields; • Plan and carry out experiments and analyze data; • Prepare manuscripts for publication; • Help supervise and guide junior researchers working on related projects; • Attend scientific seminars and participate in journal clubs; • Prepare talks and posters of research results for presentation at national or international meetings.

The Department of Chemistry seeks applications throughout the academic year from individuals who are interested in obtaining temporary or special research positions within the department in the areas of analytical, biological, chemistry education, inorganic, materials, organic, or physical chemistry. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline. Level I is an entry-level position for individuals with a bachelor’s degree and generally with less than three years of professional, post-baccalaureate experience. Level II includes individuals with a bachelor’s degree and more than three years of relevant professional experience, or a recent master’s degree, and no other significant professional experience. Level III includes individuals with a bachelor’s degree and five years of work-related experience, or a master’s degree with at least 2 years experience. Level IV includes individuals with a bachelor’s degree and ten years of work-related experience, or a master’s degree with more than five years of experience. Senior Research Associate includes individuals with extensive post-baccalaureate experience, or a master’s degree and significant professional experience. Ranking and qualifications within these levels are done on a case-by-case basis with factors that include the publication record, past research funding, professional honors and awards, decisive discoveries, and management experience. The Department of Communication Studies hires Special Assistant Professors/Special Instructors from an applicant pool. Such Special Assistant Professor/Special Instructors may be hired for fall, spring, and/or summer term in a given academic year. They are hired to teach courses in communication studies in Evaluating Contemporary Television, Critical Media Studies, and Evaluating Contemporary Film.
