The position of Electron Microscopist and Imaging Specialist (EMIS) is a full-time, special, 12 month Research Scientist/Scholar I administrative professional position. The EMIS will have responsibilities in the CSU Chemistry Department’s Central Instrument Facility (CIF) Imaging and X-ray Spectroscopy laboratories; see the CIF website at http://cif.colostate.edu for more information. The mission of these laboratories is to provide state-of-the-art research services in support of our Materials Chemistry programs. Responsibilities will include providing advanced research services and training for, and routine maintenance of, electron microscopy (EM) methods and instruments including ultra-high resolution transmission EM (HR-TEM), scanning transmission EM (STEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), electron diffraction (ED) and electron-beam lithography (EBEAM) with our new JEOL JEM-2100F HR-TEM, as well as our extant JSM-6500F SEM and Hitachi S-2700 SEM. The CIF laboratories are equipped with many other tools and instruments supporting its research support mission to chemistry-affiliated projects on campus and in the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a dedicated group of six other research scientists and support personnel responsible for instruments and equipment in five other labs that are involved in all aspects of the chemical and physical characterization of compounds, bulk materials, thin films and surfaces. These include ultra-high vacuum systems, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) in myriad forms, physical property measurements (PPMS and SQUID-MPMS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and other probe-based imaging techniques, optical spectroscopy (IR, UV-Vis-NIR, VASE), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA), mass spectrometry (GCMS, LCMS, FTMS) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR and EPR).
All instruments in the CIF are available for use by the successful candidate, who will be expected to collaborate with colleagues, other staff scientists, faculty and other principal investigators to advance CSU’s primary research, education and service mission. As mentioned previously, EMIS responsibilities will include routine maintenance of the HR-TEM/STEM and other assigned equipment and the training of new users, as well as user-manual preparation and providing data for a various projects. Collaborations with senior investigators is expected. Contributions to shared instrument proposals will also be expected. Other instruments may be assigned as the need or opportunity arises and will be determined by the CIF Director.
The successful EMIS candidate must have a Ph.D. in a chemistry-related discipline, and some expertise with hard materials will be considered advantageous. Hands-on familiarity with UHV, HR-TEM, STEM and other X-ray imaging and spectroscopy techniques is required. Familiarity with EELS, lithography, and focused ion-beam milling will be considered advantageous. Experience with JEOL Instrumentation in particular is also an advantage. The ability to write and communicate clearly, as well as to think and work independently will be vital. Independent and collaborative research is encouraged.
