Teach one section of E210 (Beginning Creative Writing) for one semester.

General Information
The Department of English at CSU has a tenure-track faculty of 35, approximately 450 undergraduate majors, and 100 graduate students. We appoint approximately 35 graduate teaching assistants who teach creative and expository writing and English as a second language. Undergraduate concentrations in creative writing, English education, language, literature, and writing lead to a B.A. in English. Master of Arts degrees are offered in creative nonfiction, English education, literature, rhetoric and composition, and TESL/TEFL. A Master of Fine Arts is offered in creative writing. Requirements: The Department of Communication Studies hires Special Instructors/Special Assistant Professors from an applicant pool. A Master of Arts in Communication Studies is required.
Applicants with an M.A. will be hired at the rank of Special Instructor. Applicants with a Ph.D. will be hired at the rank of Special Assistant Professor. In addition to the degree, we require experience teaching a specific subject area and teaching excellence. Special faculty are hired to teach a variety of courses in communication studies such as public speaking, popular culture, public argumentation, group communication, interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, evaluating contemporary television, critical media studies, and film history. A full-time instructor/professor teaches four (4) sections per semester. These positions are typically full-time, 9-month appointments; part-time and summer appointments are occasionally available. Appointees at 50% FTE or better may be eligible for benefits.

Such instructors are hired full time for fall and spring terms in a given academic year. Positions are available in 2014-15 for Instructors in First-Year Composition Administration and Upper-Division Composition Administration.

Instructors in First-Year Composition Administration receive one course release per semester to train and supervise GTAs in CO150 College Composition and collaborate on updating the common CO150 syllabus and course materials. They teach six courses per year in addition, which usually include 100- and 300-level composition. The availability of other courses is based on department need and the instructor’s background.

Instructors in Upper-Division Composition Administration receive one course release per year for administrative and curricular work, including developing professional development workshops and materials. They teach seven courses per year, consisting of 300-level composition courses.

Instructors are expected to meet departmental objectives for the courses they teach.
Requirements for both positions are an MA; a record of college teaching excellence; initiative for composition program development; supervisory experience, preferably in composition program administration; experience developing programmatic and instructional materials; and knowledge of multimodal composition theory and practice. Teaching experience in upper-division composition is required for positions in Upper-Division Composition Program Administration. A PhD, MFA, or ABD is preferred. For positions in First-Year Composition Administration, preference will be given to candidates with academic or scholarly credentials in composition theory and pedagogy or rhetoric and those with recent teaching experience in CSU’s composition program or one similar to it.

Terms of Employment: These distinctive assignments are customarily for three-year terms. Annual reappointment depends on satisfactory performance.
