Position available for Fall and Spring semesters, 2013-2014, for Instructor in Composition Administration: Writing Center Administration
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • MA required; PhD, MFA, or ABD preferable • Currently teaching composition in the CSU English Department with a special appointment • Record of college teaching excellence • Experience with writing center theory, pedagogy and administration • Initiative for program development • Supervisory experience, preferably in composition program administration • Experience developing instructional materials for distribution via the internet
Preference will be given to candidates with academic or scholarly credentials in composition theory, writing pedagogy, TESL, or rhetoric.
Duties: The position is full time (4/4 load) with one course release each semester for administrative work. Responsibilities include collaborating with the Writing Center Director to develop materials for and participate in Writing Center consultant training and development; coordinate the Course Collaboration and Writing Center Tutorial programs; spend five hours per week directly supervising Writing Center operations; observe and evaluate consultants’ performance; maintain records of Writing Center activities; and evaluate Writing Center performance. Successful applicants will be expected to meet departmental objectives for the courses they teach. In composition, instructors might teach CO130 (Academic Writing), CO150 (College Composition), CO300 (Writing Arguments), CO301 (Writing in the Disciplines), or CO302 (Writing Online). The availability of other courses is based on department need and the instructor’s background.
Salary: This position is a special assignment. Annual reappointment depends on performance and the continued availability of funding. The term of this assignment is customarily three years. The salary for the position will be the successful applicant’s 2012-13 100% salary, plus any increase from a salary exercise (if the University has one), plus an administrative stipend of $2500 per academic year.
General Information: The English department at CSU has a tenure-track faculty of 35, approximately 500 undergraduate majors, and more than 140 graduate students. The University Composition Program houses five programs which serve the University at large: the First-Year Composition Program (FYC), the Upper-Division Composition Program (UDC), the University Writing Center, the gtPathways Writing Program (GTP), and the Composition Placement Program. Each of these programs is unified by our faculty commitment to teaching writing as a rhetorical act of inquiry and learning, ensuring that our programs are consistent with national standards for best practice, and maintaining a clear and reliable understanding of CSU’s students’ writing backgrounds and needs. The department appoints more than 35 graduate teaching assistants who teach creative and expository writing and English as a second language. Undergraduate concentrations in creative writing, English education, language, literature, and writing lead to a B.A. in English. Master of Arts degrees are offered in creative nonfiction, English education, literature, rhetoric and composition, and TESL/TEFL. A Master of Fine Arts is offered in creative writing. Applications must include: • a letter of application that outlines your writing center administration experience/potential and your teaching experience and range of teaching interests, particularly those courses you are interested in teaching at CSU; • a detailed résumé or c.v.; • documentation of your post-baccalaureate degree (e.g., a photocopy of your diploma; a transcript that notes the degree conferred); • a descriptive overview that highlights specific examples of teaching practices, discusses any professional development to mentor/prepare other teachers or Writing Center tutors, explains any experience with composition program administration, and explains how the hiring committee should weigh other supporting material; • recent supporting materials that indicate teaching quality in each of 4 categories: written reports of classroom observations, student evaluations, syllabi, three student papers reflecting a range of grades (one paper an “A,” one a “B,” and one below a “B”) in response to a single assignment. These papers should include your marginal and end comments; the English department considers responding to student writing central to good teaching, and thus we review these comments as indications of pedagogical effectiveness. Please also include a narrative describing the assignment and grading criteria (up to one page). Explain how the assignment fits into the overall picture of the course; • three recent (written in the last 3-5 ) letters of reference that speak to teaching and administrative experience/potential; • a street address, phone number, and email address where you can be reached during both the school year and the summer.
