The Department of English at Colorado State University seeks applications for an ESL/ELL specialist to work in the University Writing Center. This position is dependent on funding for 2013-2014.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • MA required • Experience with ESL/ELL • Demonstrated expertise in L2 writing • Native or near-native English skills • Initiative for program development • Experience developing instructional materials for distribution via the internet
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • PhD, MFA, or ABD preferred • Academic or scholarly credentials in ESL/ELL/TESL and writing center theory and pedagogy • Ability to help plan and deliver professional development on L2 writing to Writing Center consultants working with international students to ensure the students’ academic success • Demonstrated record of professional activity in TESL/TEFL • Evidence of successful college teaching • Supervisory experience, preferably in writing center or composition program administration • Experience in mentoring or working with students of diverse backgrounds
RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is designed to support internationalization initiatives at the University as they impact use of the Writing Center. The successful candidate will mentor consultants through direct interaction as well as the development of six hours of staff training on best practices for working with and supporting English language learners (ELL). The candidate will also work with the Writing Center staff to revise the Writing Center Tutorial (WCT) and Course Collaboration programs to meet the needs of ELL writers. The Writing Center ELL specialist will work with the Writing Center Director on additional administrative and pedagogical projects as needed.
COMPENSATION: This position will be compensated up to the equivalent of two course releases at the base per-section rate for the academic year (in 2012-13 that was $8,186). Annual reappointment depends on performance and the continued availability of funding.
GENERAL INFORMATION: The English Department at CSU has a tenure-track faculty of 35, approximately 500 undergraduate majors, and more than 140 graduate students. The University Composition Program houses five programs which serve the University at large: the First-Year Composition Program (FYC), the Upper-Division Composition Program (UDC), the University Writing Center, the gtPathways Writing Program (GTP), and the Composition Placement Program. Each of these programs is unified by our faculty commitment to teaching writing as a rhetorical act of inquiry and learning, ensuring that our programs are consistent with national standards for best practice, and maintaining a clear and reliable understanding of CSU’s students’ writing backgrounds and needs. The department appoints more than 35 graduate teaching assistants who teach creative and expository writing and English as a second language. Undergraduate concentrations in creative writing, English education, language, literature, and writing lead to a B.A. in English. Master of Arts degrees are offered in creative nonfiction, English education, literature, rhetoric and composition, and TESL/TEFL. A Master of Fine Arts is offered in creative writing.
