The Boulder branch of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill a professional scientific position for its collaborative research as a Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) Global Systems Division (GSD), in Boulder, Colorado (office will be in Boulder).
Background: The Forecast Applications Branch (FAB) of the Global Systems Division (GSD) of the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) is engaged in cutting-edge research and development aimed at improved data assimilation, numerical modeling, and ensemble forecasting methods for the prediction of high impact weather events on fine time and spatial scales. FAB seeks a full-time employee with experience in Observing System Experiments (OSE) and preferably Observing Systems Simulation Experiments (OSSE) with some background in adaptive observations and a desire to become a member of a dynamic research team. The individual in this position will conduct OSSE and related experiments to assess the value of (a) observations made from Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and other platforms including satellites, and (b) advanced observing techniques such as targeted observations.
Responsibilities: The individual in this position will contribute to achieving GSD’s research and development objectives in a number of areas, including: • Carry out OSSE experiments related to observations made from UAS and other platforms • Support OSSE-related research as to the generation of synthetic observations, calibration, and other components • Conduct Research and development related to adaptive observation schemes • Contribution to the assessment of analysis, forecast, and observational errors, including forecast error covariances as estimated from a set of ensemble forecasts • Contribute to the preparation of proposals and project reports as needed • Coordinate with internal and external collaborators (NOAA OSSE testbed, AOML, NCEP, NASA and JCSDA) • Participate in other data assimilation and modeling projects as needed
Qualifications: Required qualifications include a M.S. or a Ph.D. degree in Meteorology, Applied Mathematics, or related fields, preferably with specialization in data assimilation, numerical forecasting, in-situ and remotely sensed data, or statistical post-processing. Note: Position title of Research Scientist I will apply to an applicant with a PhD; otherwise, title of Research Associate III will apply. Desired technical proficiencies include the following: • Knowledge and experience with probability and statistics • Extensive experience in NWP • Knowledge of and experience with programming languages (Fortran-90 preferred) and scripting • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems, display tools, and MPI is a plus Other desired qualifications include: • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a development team • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written skills) with researchers and other staff members
