Q&A with Paul Kowalczyk

Q: What are the university’s plans in regard to the athletics facilities?
A critical element to having the success that we expect at Colorado State is having outstanding facilities.  They will help us build and maintain successful programs, create a first-class image for Colorado State University and better our student-athlete experience.

Q: What will be the impact on the sports programs?
Every program will benefit from these facilities.  The indoor practice facility will be used by all of our sports teams whether they are in season or involved in off-season conditioning.  The academic and training center reinforces our commitment to a sound mind and body.  Academically, it will help us graduate our student-athletes while the weight room will assist them in reaching their athletic potential.

Q: What is the timetable for the new buildings?
This project has moved rapidly since breaking ground in the Fall of 2008. Construction on both buildings is on schedule and each will be fully operational when our student-athletes arrive on campus in August 2009.

Q: What was the process that led to the current facilities goals?
The process started several years ago by developing a long-range facility plan for the athletic department.  That plan, with these two facilities as priorities, was presented to the President and was then forwarded to the Board of Governors.  All were very supportive as they understood the need to invest in athletics and what a successful athletics program can do for the university.

Q: What will be the impact on campus with regard to the student recreation area?
The construction process will have minimal impact on the student recreation areas and campus.  There will be one team affected by the changes.  The Rams’ tennis courts are being relocated so our tennis team will be using other facilities until the new courts are completed.

IMPACT ON STUDENT-ATHLETES

Q: What does the new academic center mean to CSU student-athletes?
The Anderson Academic Center reinforces our commitment to the academic achievements of our student-athletes.  We will create an inviting and supportive learning environment to which our student-athletes will gravitate.

Q: Why do we need an additional practice facility?
The two major issues are weather and scheduling.  We are pressed for space on this campus and when volleyball, both basketball teams and football are in season, the issue becomes acute.  Add inclement weather and a severe domino effect takes place throughout our various athletic, health and exercise science and recreation spaces.

Q: Will there be any changes to the current facilities?
This project does not include any renovations to current facilities.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Q: How long will the new facilities take to complete?
The new facilities will be fully operational in August 2009 when our student-athletes arrive on campus.

Q: Where are the new facilities located on campus?
Academic and training Center: South side of the McGraw Athletic Center
Indoor Practice Facility: East of Moby Arena and the Intramural Gym

CSU Facilities Management and the Department of Athletics chose the locations jointly.

Saunders Construction, Inc. from Centennial, Colo.

FINANCIAL PLANS

Q: How much will the project cost?
Approximately $20 million

Q: Where is the money coming from?
The construction of these new buildings was funded through the sale of bonds. In order to minimize the impact these annual bond payments have on our athletic department budget, we are continuing to raise funds to work towards retiring this debt. Excellent naming opportunities are still available.
