With more than 150 programs of study in eight colleges, Colorado State University offers a world-class education at one of the nation’s top research universities. The University

  • Colorado State is one of the nation's best institutions for undergraduate education and one of the 120 "Best in the West," according to The Princeton Review, a New York-based education services company. Only 25 percent of the nation's 2,500 four-year colleges surveyed were listed in "2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region" at www.PrincetonReview.com. Colorado State also ranked as one of the best overall 373 colleges in the new 2011 edition of Princeton's annual guide.
  • Colorado State was listed among the "100 Best Values in Public Colleges 2009-2010" ranked by Kiplinger's. The rankings are based on a combination of academics and affordability.
  • In the Spotlight

    The School of Global Environmental Sustainability, the first of its kind in the state, gives students the opportunity to complement their majors with environmental courses. The School will train students in a broad range of environmental issues and allow them to interact and learn from the best educators and scientists in the world. [more]

    Colorado State is among Forbes' America's Best Colleges list for 2010, released earlier this month. The ranking lists the best public and private colleges and universities, from the student's point of view.

Departments & Programs

  • BusinessWeek magazine ranked Colorado State's College of Business as one of the top undergraduate business programs in the country for 2009, and Princeton Review names the College's distance MBA program as one of the best in the nation for 2010.
  • U.S. News and World Report ranked the veterinary medicine program at Colorado State's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences second in the nation among America's best graduate schools in its most current ranking in 2007. It is the only veterinary medical program in the Western states to be ranked among the top 10.
  • Colorado State's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences leads all other schools of its kind in external research funding.
  • Colorado State's Department of Atmospheric Science is ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Research Council for departments of atmospheric sciences, meteorology, and oceanography.
  • Colorado State's Department of Occupational Therapy was ranked eighth in the nation in 2008 by U.S. News and World Report "America's Best Graduate Schools" rankings. The department has been ranked in the top 10 occupational therapy programs by the U.S. News and World Report survey for multiple years.
  • U.S. News and World Report recently named the graduate program in chemistry at Colorado State University one of the top 50 programs in the country. The ranking was included in the 2011 Edition of America's Best Graduate Schools.
  • In 2009, Poets & Writers Magazine ranked Colorado State's Creative Writing Master of Fine Arts as one of the nation's top 50 programs.
  • The College of Agricultural Sciences consistently ranks in the top 10 in the country in terms of awards, grants and contracts received.
  • Colorado State University ranks 15 in the nation among all universities and colleges for the number of alumni serving as Peace Corps volunteers according to the most recent rankings by the Peace Corps. Fifty-nine Colorado State alumni volunteered for the Peace Corps in 2009. The university consistently lands in the top 15 among universities and colleges with more than 15,000 undergraduates.

Academic and Co-curricular Programs

As one of the nation’s leading research universities, Colorado State sets the standard in scholarship and discovery. CSU faculty are researching and tackling critical global issues, such as the reemergence of tuberculosis, air pollution in Asian cities, severe weather forecasting, nutrition and wellness, and bioterrorism. Students have the opportunity to work alongside faculty and participate in cutting-edge research as early as their freshman year.

Research Highlights

Dr. Anthony Simon Turner was honored with American Veterinary Medical Association Lifetime Excellence in Research Award. Turner has been a member of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences faculty since 1977. [more]

The Rocky Mountain Regional Center of Excellence was awarded a $36.4 million from the National Institutes of Health, National Institutes of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, to continue the fight against the world's most important infectious diseases. The Center was established in 2005 when a group of universities, led by Colorado State University, received an initial $40 million to begin a collaboration to synergize their collective expertise, increasing their effectiveness at researching infectious diseases. Faculty members have more than doubled the number of invention disclosures - detailed descriptions of inventions - filed with the CSU Research Foundation technology transfer office in the past three years. As of the end of June, faculty had exceeded 100 invention disclosures in FY 2009. [more]

The cookstove design and development teams at Envirofit International and the Engines and Energy Conversion Lab at CSU have won a Bronze IDEA for Envirofit's clean cookstove in the Ecodesign category in the 2009 International Design Excellence Awards.  [more]

Professor Bryan Willson, co-founder of Envirofit International and Solix Biofuels, joins President Barack Obama, Microsoft mogul Bill Gates and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the first Scientific American 10: Guiding Science for Humanity honor roll for innovations that benefit humanity. She looks at all of the components – national governments, international businesses, non-governmental organizations, the market, individual choices – on a "big picture scale" and assesses how the pieces fit together. Jennifer DeLuca, an assistant professor of biochemistry at Colorado State University, is making quite an impression on the scientific community. DeLuca recently was awarded one of 17 2009 Pew Scholars in biomedical sciences. [more]

Doug Hoffman

Early in his career as dean of the College of Business, Ajay Menon asked Professor Doug Hoffman to attend a Georgia State symposium on teaching. Hoffman, who was already winning teaching awards, came back energized and created the Master Teacher Initiative –a compilation of professional development opportunities aimed at elevating the teaching mission within CSU’s College of Business. Susan James holds a series of prestigious titles at the university: In addition to being professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering, James is the founding director of the School of Biomedical Engineering - an interdisciplinary program across four colleges that aims to have a unified front for students, faculty and the biomedical industry; and co-director of the Orthopedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory at Colorado State. Dr. Chris Kawcak

Dr. Chris Kawcak is making pioneering advances in equine musculoskeletal disease and injury research. Dr. Kawcak is one of a team of researchers working to find ways to prevent and treat catastrophic injuries in equine athletes, such as the injuries sustained by Barbaro and Eight Belles. [more]

Matt Malcolm

Thanks to the work of CSU researcher Matt Malcolm, rehabilitation professionals are learning more about what therapies help recover the loss of movement caused by a stroke. Malcolm, director of the university's NeuroRehabilitation Research Laboratory, is devoted to understanding what therapies are the most promising. [more]

Stuart Tobe

When we think of migration, we often imagine geese flying south to escape winter’s cold, Monarch butterflies flying north for the summer from Mexico, and salmon swimming upstream to spawn. We don’t often think of cells migrating within the organs of our bodies. But the migration of cells – particularly neuronal cells – is critically important to the normal functioning of the human nervous system. Cellular migration and unlocking the cellular and molecular reasons behind behavior and disease are Professor Stuart Tobet’s passion. [more]
