Description:
Technology generation begins with a need. High technology for the sake of hi tech is irrelevant. New for the sake of new may be a waste of resources. Appropriate technology addressees a need by providing a solution that fits the village resources and goals within the local culture. "Appropriate technology is the skills, knowledge and procedures for making, using and doing useful things, while making optimum use of human, natural, and person-made resources in the village -- with ‘optimum’ determined on a village-specific basis by the villagers themselves." (Faulkner and Albertson, p. 128)
This course if for anyone who works with communities (or would like to work with communities) to develop sustainable technology-based solutions. The course explores the history and basic principles of appropriate technology as well as practices strategies for their successful generation as part of a integrated and holistic approach to community-based development.
The course also explores ways community workers can support community-based technology generation and evaluation efforts through participatory planning, reflective dialiogue as well as practical resources for accessing information about different appropriate technologies.
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Understand the history and basic principles of appropriate technology.
- Work with communities to analyze their situation, develop strategic directions, and generate appropriate technology packages.
- Support community-based technology generation efforts by creating linkages to information and resources.
