Community-based Forestry

Description:
This course presents perspectives on sustainable resource use and management of forests by communities in developed and developing countries, including the integration of social, economic, and policy considerations related to natural resource management. Overviews of various forms of community forests: User Group Forestry, Urban Forestry, Private Forestry, Social Forestry, Communal Concessions and Community Conservancy will be presented and discussed. Major issues related to community forestry will be compared and contrasted in the developed and developing world.
The instructor is Narayan Kaji Shrestha, who has extensive experience in Asia, especially in Nepal, and other parts of the world dealing with the human dimensions of natural resource management.
Objectives:

to explore the participatory processes in community-centered forestry, and seek to develop participants’ critical analysis of the key characteristics relevant to community forestry.

To reviews the key conceptual issues of community forestry that relate to government policies, management structure and operations, socio-political and commercial power, resource tenure, roles based on culture and gender, indigenous communities and traditional knowledge, community dynamics, and community-based silviculture.
Course emphasis:
The course aim is to provide a broad understanding of social, cultural, economic and management issues related to the community management of natural resources in sustainable development and sustaining democracy but emphasis will be placed on the forest resource and Asia especially Nepal although case studies from other regions of the world will also be used in the course.
