CSU NASA 23rd Annual Contest Powwow
Dance Contest Rules
Welcome to the Colorado State University Native American Student Association 23rd Annual Powwow. We hope that you have a wonderful time. The following are rules that we need you to follow as a competitor. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
- Registration for the competition dancing closes at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 16th. There will be no exceptions.
- Contestants must be in at least two grand entries to qualify for contest prizes.
- Contestants may enter only one contest category.
- Contestants are asked to display their numbers on the left side to aid the judges and number-takers during grand entry.
- Head dancers will be picked per session and are welcomed to participate in the dance contests. This does not affect their eligibility for prize money.
- Each contestant will be judged on dancing ability, skill, and attire.
- Each contestant must wear appropriate attire for the division in which they compete.
- Any contestant believed to be intoxicated will be immediately disqualified.
- The dance contests are based upon a point system as follows: Grand Entry = 50, Participation = 50, Contest: 1st place = 75, 2nd place = 50, 3rd place = 25.
- Dancers who are singing with a drum group during grand entry must be fully dressed in their outfits if they wish to get grand entry points.
- If any major part of a contestant’s attire is dropped during the contest, they should disqualify themselves.
- If any contestant over or under-steps, they should disqualify themselves.
- Because there is a combination of Northern and Southern style dancing in particular categories, the Arena Director may select the drum for those contests.
- Judges will be selected by the Arena Director.
- Decisions of the Powwow Committee and judges are final.
- Prize money will be awarded at the conclusion of the Powwow.
- Contestants must be in full dance attire to get prize money.
