Research Interests

I conduct applied and basic research into the causes and management of turfgrass, tree, ornamental and small grain diseases. These studies involve understanding the biology, genetic diversity, diagnostics and management of these diseases. My research group is currently studying snow mold caused by Typhula species with the goal of improving integrated management. I also am involved in developing molecular marker techniques for high consequence pathogens such as Pythium species. Recently we discovered a new and potentially catastrophic disease of black walnut called thousand cankers, and we are researching ways to prevent movement of the pathogen and insect vector. I provide extension programming for turf, ornamentals, small grains and some row crops and serve as the IPM and Pesticide Safety coordinator. I am currently involved in the development of basic and advanced plant pest diagnostic training for Colorado Master Gardeners (CMG). The purpose of this program is to insure that diagnostics and pest management information supplied to consumers by CMG is accurate and science based.
