Internship Sponsor FAQ's

How much should I pay an intern?
Most paid internships offer $6 to $12 an hour. While you don't have to pay an intern, we encourage you to do so. About half of our internships, however, are unpaid, offering academic credit and valuable experience.

How many hours do interns work?
A CSU journalism intern is required to work 50 hours for each credit earned up to three credits. The hours should be fulfilled over ten weeks, so interns will work five hours per week for each credit. Most interns get two or three credits per internship.

What hours will an intern work?
This is negotiated between you and the intern. Please remember that most interns are attending school full-time in the regular school year and working other paid jobs in the summer.

Who will interview the applicants?
You will. Applicants will learn of your opening through the Journalism Department Web site, and they will contact you directly. The final choice on whom to sponsor is entirely yours.

When will I hear from students?
Students usually begin interviewing about six weeks before they would start an internship. Some set one up at the last minute; they won't call you until just before they would begin working for you.

What if I don't hear from anyone?
Have patience. While some of our internships go unfilled, most are not arranged until a few weeks before the semester begins. If you've posted your internship opening for at least a month and still haven't heard from anyone, call CSU Journalism Internship Director JoAnn Cornell, 970-491-4641, to see if she can help.

Will an intern be able to “hit the ground running”?
Yes. All CSU Journalism students eligible for academic internship credit must have completed junior-level skills courses with a “C” or better. CSU is committed to sending interns into the workplace who will contribute positively to your organization and receive beneficial work experience for themselves.

Who insures CSU interns?
All CSU students who are registered for academic internship credit are covered by the University’s Workman’s Compensation Insurance for any accident that occurs while a student is performing internship-related work. It is important that you only accept students who are getting academic credit if you want them to be covered by our insurance. A letter verifying registration is available from Internship Director JoAnn Cornell, 970- 491-4641, or joann.cornell@colostate.edu, at any time.
