Students can enhance their classroom learning and earn up to four credits through the department's Internship course (JTC 487). Graduate students can earn one credit per semester, up to three total credits in JTC 687.

Your Adviser must also sign your Internship Interest Form.
In order to receive credit for your internship, you must fulfill a concentration-specific required class.
Review Notebooks of available internships (located near C-226, Clark).
Select internships that interest you. Check the list of available internships for new opportunities. If you find an internship on your own, you must get your adviser's and the Internship Director's (JoAnn Cornell) approval before signing up.
Meet with the Internship Director before you send out your resume and cover letter.
Apply by following these steps:
Step one - Create a one-page resume and gather samples of your work
Step two - Send resume, cover letter and samples to appropriate internship opportunities
Step three - Follow up with a phone call asking for an interview
Step four - Go to the interview, on time and dressed professionally
Step five - If offered an internship, see JoAnn Cornell, internship director, to fill out appropriate paperwork and to receive assignments so you will receive credit
Register for the internship class during registration period
(Note: Only 7 credits combined of JT 484, JT 487, JT 495 and JT 496 will be allowed in degree fulfillment with no more than 3 credits applied toward fulfillment of JT elective credit. You cannot earn more than 38 credits in journalism and must have 80 credits outside the journalism department to graduate. Internships during your college career can only combine for a maximum of 4 credits.)
You can earn one credit for five hours of work per week; two credits for ten hours of work; and three credits for 15 or more hours of work. Graduate students earn only one credit for internship work no matter how many hours worked. You are expected to work 10 weeks for summer school credit.
You do receive a letter grade. Your internship grade is a combination of the evaluation by your internship supervisor, class assignments and samples of your best work at the end of the internship. Your supervisor will be asked to sign an agreement acknowledging the number of hours and the type of work you will be doing. That person will also fill out an evaluation form at the end of the semester. You cannot register for the internship until you have given your internship interest form and the supervisor agreement form to JoAnn Cornell.
