International Master's Student Application Guidelines
Application Requirements
The Department of Journalism and Technical Communication follows the University Requirements for admission to its master's program in Technical Communication; see the Graduate and Professional Bulletin and the requirements specified below.
We will consider your potential for completing the degree based on the following: a degree from an accepted four-year college; undergraduate grade point average; GRE scores; TOEFL and, if possible, Test of Writing in English scores; professional experience, if any; three letters of recommendation; statement of career plans; transcripts from bachelor’s degree (all transcripts from all collegiate work); three samples of writing and communication production skills and any other evidence. Exceptions to specified requirements may be made if warranted.

When you are ready to apply online, click on “Go To Online Application” at the top right of the page.
Append the following supplemental materials the online application (Part 2 – Graduate Supplemental Application) by logging back in and selecting the application in progress:
Résumé or curriculum vitae showing dates and details of professional and academic experience.
A statement of purpose indicating your reasons for pursuing an M.S.
Submit to the CSU Admissions Office:
Cover letter indicating semester of interest and stating whether you plan to pursue the degree full-time or part-time. Indicate what documents will follow, if any. We need your completed application and all supporting materials before we can evaluate your application.
Two official transcripts of all collegiate work completed, along with a certified translation into English. (Colorado State University transcripts are not required.)
Submit your application packet in a 9x12 or larger envelope so the application materials remain flat.
Submit all application materials as early as possible. Your file should be completed no later than the admissions deadlines for your circumstances. Depending on the number of applicants, the Graduate Committee usually makes recommendations to the Department and Graduate School shortly after these deadline dates. Please note that the cutoff date for international students to submit graduate applications is three months prior to the start date of the term. Admitted applicants begin their program the following August or January.
All admission forms for accepted international students must be processed no later than 2.5 months before the semester starts, to allow sufficient time for processing immigration paperwork.

STEP 2: Obtain Letters of Recommendation
Please have three individuals who have known you in different capacities (advisors, professors, employers, supervisors or individuals in similar positions) send us letters of recommendation on your behalf. When asking for letters of recommendation:

STEP 3: Complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language and the Graduate Record Examinations and Submit Your Scores, including the Test of Writing in English (TWE) if available.
Have ETS send a) your TOEFL or IELTS scores, b) your TWE if available, and c) your GRE scores to Colorado State University. Only scores submitted through the testing institution will be accepted.
Our institution code (for TOEFL, TWE, and GRE) is 4075.
Our department code (for GRE) is 4503.
If these codes are indicated on the test forms, the testing center will send the scores to the Journalism and Technical Communication Department at CSU.
If you have not completed the general section (verbal, quantitative, analytical segments) of the Graduate Record Examinations, do so as soon as possible. To obtain a GRE application and examination dates, contact:

The minimum TOEFL score for unconditional admission is 213 (computer-based), 550 (paper-based), or 80 (internet-based). Official scores, taken within two years prior to admission, must be submitted directly from the Educational Testing Service.
Students are exempted from the TOEFL requirement if the official language of their country is English or if they have recently earned a degree at an American university. ILTS scores are acceptable in addition to TOEFL scores as proof of English proficiency.
