Research Interests
Dr. Hansen works in agroecosystem management of both dryland and irrigated crop production environments. He leads a field oriented research program to develop cropping systems that conserve soil and water resources. Specific research areas include soil erosion, soil carbon dynamics, managing agricultural phosphorus to protect water quality, deficit irrigation practices for grain and forage crop production, and iron deficiency chlorosis in soybean. He is currently evaluating irrigated cropping systems that reduce consumptive water use in order to make water available to meet growing demand by urban users. Dr. Hansen also has a research interest in soil science undergraduate education trends. |
Teaching Responsibilities
- Soil and Crop Management I and II (SOCR 420 and 421) These companion courses take an interdisciplinary approach to soil and crop management and addresses crop production from economic and ecological perspectives. SOCR 421 is a senior capstone course for Soil and Crop Science majors.
- Environmental Soil Science (SOCR 478) Dr. Hansen team teaches this course, covering the use of prediction models for water and wind erosion.

Extension & Outreach
Dr. Hansen leads an active outreach education program involving farm producers, agricultural professionals, and staff from federal and state agencies on topics related to soil and water conservation and management. He also had international outreach work including agricultural projects in Russia and Australia.
