Continuous Corn

SOIL QUALITY IMPACT AFTER FOUR YEARS OF MANURE APPLICATION RATES AND SCHEDULES
Corn picture Long term (2000-2004) impacts of manure application were analyzed. Manure was applied in the spring or fall and the incorporation time varied by treatment (Figure 1). All plots were analyzed for microbial diversity, pH, electrical conductivity, infiltration, and organic matter in fall 2003. Water retention samples were collected in spring 2004 and are currently being analyzed. The soil quality results are summarized in Table 1.

1 HPC Diversity is the heterotrophic plate count.
2 EC is the electrical conductivity of the soil in mmhos/cm.
3 OM represents the organic matter as a percentage.

Results

  • Soil bulk density, pH, and OM were insignificant (p<0.05) among treatments compared to one another.
  • Heterotrophic plate count, anaerobic bacteria (includes facultative anaerobes), yeast and mold, Actinomycetes, Pseudomonads, nitrogen-fixing bacteria were also counted and were insignificant (p<0.05) by treatment.
  • Anaerobic bacteria (includes facultative anaerobes) diversity, yeast and mold diversity, Actinomycetes diversity, Pseudomonad diversity, nitrogen-fixing bacteria diversity, and species richness diversity were insignificant (p<0.05) by treatment.
