Research
Dr. Peek’s research focuses on the intersection of social inequality, vulnerability, and disasters. Her most recent research projects include an exploration of identity formation processes among second-generation Muslim Americans after the September 11 terrorist attacks, a study of children’s experiences in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina, and an examination of the relocation experiences of parents and children displaced to the state of Colorado in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (http://www.MileHiNewOrleans.org/). Dr. Peek has been awarded research grants from the American Association of University Women, the College of Liberal Arts at Colorado State University, the Midwest Sociological Society, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation, the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado, and the Public Entity Risk Institute.

Dr. Peek teaches the following courses at Colorado State University: Contemporary Race-Ethnic Relations (S 205), Contemporary Sociological Theory (S 302), Social Movements and Collective Behavior (S 474), and Sociology of Disaster (S 463).

In 2007, Dr. Peek received the Best Teacher Award from the Colorado State University Alumni Association and the Student Alumni Connection and the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Liberal Arts. She also received the Waterpik Excellence in Education Award from Colorado State University Athletics and an Outstanding Faculty Member Designation from the Colorado State University Greek Community.
