ALPHA KAPPA DELTA

International Sociology Honor Society
Gamma Chapter Colorado State University

AKDAlpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is a non-secret, democratic, international honor society of scholars dedicated to the ideal of Athropon Katamanthanein Diakonesein or “to investigate humanity for the purpose of service.” AKD seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement of the human condition.

AKD was founded at the University of Southern California in 1920 and became affiliated with the Association of College Honor Societies in 1967. Approximately 50,000 lifetime members are affiliated with more than 500 chapters of the honor society. These are persons with academic records showing excellence in sociology. The Gamma Chapter at Colorado State University was chartered in 1964.

There are several benefits to joining AKD. The society funds student travel to professional conferences, sponsors annual student paper competitions, and funds guest speakers. Additionally, all members receive a subscription to the journal Sociological Inquiry. Membership in AKD also provides official recognition of academic achievement in the field of sociology. In April of each year, students attend an induction ceremony at which they receive an honor cord to be worn at graduation and an official certificate of membership.

Membership Criteria for Undergraduate Students:

  • Officially Declared Sociology Major
  • Junior or Senior Status (60+ Credits)
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or Above
  • Sociology GPA of 3.0 or Above
  • Completion of at Least 4 Courses in Sociology Prior to Initiation

Membership Criteria for Graduate Students:

  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or Above
  • Completion of at Least One Semester of Graduate Coursework in Sociology
    Prior to Initiation

If you meet the above criteria and wish to become a member of AKD, there is an application form to fill out, which you can get from the AKD bulletin board outside of Professor Lori Peek’s office (Clark Building, Room B-237).
