James S. Durham, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Radiological Health Sciences

I bring 8 years of applied health physics research and 4 years of operational experience to the Radiological Health Sciences Department. My research interests are in the area of dosimetry, including development of new dosimeters and measurement techniques, development of calculational tools, and dose calculations. Included in my past accomplishments are the development of thin thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) and exoelectron dosimeters for beta dose measurement for the US Department of Energy, writing the skin dose computer code VARSKIN Mod 2 for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and performing experimental studies of the effect of hot particles on pig skin for the Electric Power Research Institute.

My operational experience was gained while working as a project manager and principal engineer for projects conducted in a building containing two banks of hot cells.

Some of the cells contained as much as 1.5 million Curies of dispersible contamination. My experience with this type of environment will allow me to add a "real world" perspective to the health physics program at Colorado State University.
