Disability Awareness Days 2004

ELEVATE ABILITIES, EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES

Disability Awareness Days (D.A.D.) is an annual event sponsored by Resources for Disabled Students to increasing awareness about issues affecting people with disabilities. We have often looked for presenters from the campus community but have been aware we have not fully explored all that might be available. D.A.D. is scheduled for the week of March 29, 2004.

Our theme this year, ELEVATE ABILITIES, EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES, emphasizes a focus on the assets a person brings to the community whether or not that person has a specific limitation. When given a chance, all people have the ability to succeed to their own potential and that success always has an effect on the greater whole of society. When we EXPAND the OPPORTUNITIES available to individuals with disabilities, we provide the means to ELEVATE their ABILITIES and not simply highlight their limitations . We invite the campus community to help us demonstrate this concept. We know the expertise exists on this campus and we know you have valuable information to share. This is your opportunity to collaborate with us on creating an awareness event that is unique as well as informative and enlightening.

Please consider submitting a Program Proposal for consideration for this year's Disability Awareness Days. Applicants are welcome to submit more than one proposal.

General Parameters

- Focus of program must be related to disability as the general category.
- Workshops, panels, other presentations may be for any educational level; preference may be given to those that target specific campus populations (i.e., classes, majors, etc.)
- Programs that deal with innovative and successful ACCESS strategies are strongly encouraged. (Please define particular type of ACCESS within proposal)
- Use of new technologies, connections to other disciplines or successful application of strategies to promote ACCESS are also highly encouraged.

Disability is part of the human condition and cuts across many disciplines so the possibilities for programs are limitless. The following are examples of areas to give food for thought: portrayal of disability in the media, specific research results and impact on those with disabilities, significant issues in education related to disability, access to electronic information for those with disabilities, the interrelationship of disability and culture, etc.

Proposals must include:

Cover Letter: A page separate from the proposal which includes your name, mailing address, affiliation (if any), phone number, and fax and e-mail address (if any); the title of your presentation; length of time requested (60 or 90 minutes); style of presentation (e. g., workshop, panel, discussion, demonstration); list of equipment to be used; and a one paragraph description (100 -200 words) of the presentation suitable for the conference program.

Proposal: A 1 to 3 page proposal covering the title of your presentation (without your name for blind review purposes); a summary of the workshop/panel - what it covers and seeks to achieve, its methods and techniques, what participants will do and experience; a list of the handouts and materials you will provide; a list of A/V or computer equipment you will need; and any additional information that would be useful to the program selection committee.
