Disability Awareness Days, as presented by Resources for Disabled Students (RDS) at Colorado State University, has as its primary objective to heighten awareness of issues related to disability. Through this awareness, it is hoped that the community will develop a greater appreciation of the contributions of individuals with disabilities to the greater fabric of society. The tendency of most people is to view disability as a personal issue. Yet individuals with disability interact with the whole of society on a daily basis. Therefore, disability is as much a social issue as it is a personal one. If we are not mindful of the elements in society that allow, or prohibit, full participation of people with disabilities, we are not able to continue, or correct, those elements.
The programs presented during Disability Awareness Days are designed to promote a positive and realistic image of persons with disabilities. In addition, we also hope to bring understanding about the specific barriers individuals with disabilities face within society. The target audience includes the campus community as well as the surrounding Fort Collins community. As we come to understand how the experience of disability fits into the whole tapestry of society, we are better able to be more inclusive of all individuals based on similarities without losing the value of individual differences.
The theme this year, "REFRAMING DISABILITY," directs us to refocus the prevailing perspective we have on the disability experience. Having a disability is not simply a private experience. It is a lived experience within society. A person with a disability interacts daily with others. How those others perceive disability will influence that interaction significantly. Seeing disability as a social construction can help to share the responsibility in promoting a more positive outcome for that interaction. When we realize that we, as society, control whether or not individuals have access we are in a better 'frame' of mind to promote our collective strengths rather than following old habits of discrimination, prejudice and bias. It is hoped that our event will help you acknowledge our shared responsibility in the lived experience of disability.
Please join us in exploring the issues that affect our perspectives as well as behavior as we continue to strive for an inclusive community of human beings with abilities and disabilities.
