THE DIVERSITY OF DISABILITY

DISABILITY AWARENESS DAYS 2005
Schedule of Events

Disability Awareness Days (DAD) is sponsored by Resources for Disabled Students (RDS) and the Committee for Disabled Student Accessibility (CDSA).

The goal of DAD is to heighten the campus community awareness about people with disabilities as well as the major issues that affect them. More than 43 million people in the United States have a variety of disabilities. Some may have difficulty walking; others may have limitations with vision and/or hearing. Chronic health conditions affect what some people might be able to do while other conditions affect how someone might process information. Limitations may be obvious while others may be non-apparent to the average observer. The diversity of the types of disabilities that exist is vast and new types are discovered daily. So, too, are the societal issues that affect people with disabilities. These issues range from access, attitude, and advocacy to self-identity, self-expression, and self-worth. In addition, as a human characteristic, disability cuts across all other forms of diversity such as religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status. To be disabled is truly an equal opportunity; one may join at any time in life, whether one wants to or not. Yet, when one joins the larger community of disabled people, each person adds to its richness, its complexity, and its humanity. The Diversity of Disability is simply the diversity of being human. Please join us this year in exploring the various aspects that contribute to the Diversity of Disability.
