Department

Career Services, Student Affair

This department has made many changes over the last year in their reorganization and remodeling. One of the most outstanding decisions they made was to incorporate the needs of students with disabilities into all these changes. From deciding to buy expensive equipment so that students had access to "print" material to designing their office space to accommodate students in wheelchairs, the focus of this office has been to include disabled students rather than to simply accommodate their needs. Not only did they decide to incorporate this population as they incorporate other groups, but this office did it without prompting from an outside entity. They are a model for not only what can be done but what should be done - as a matter of course.

Faculty

Dr. Peter Bechtel, Food Science and Human Nutrition

Dr. Bechtel has been more than cooperative in working with a deaf student to accommodate her needs within his academic department. This has required numerous hours of meetings and explanation of procedures, policies, etc. as well as working with individual faculty members working with the student. This particular student has brought unique needs to this campus and Dr. Bechtel has been more than willing to work with the challenges.

Staff

Dawn Watson, University Counseling Center

Dawn is the office "point-person" in accomplishing our Alternative Testing services. As the receptionist at the Counseling Center Testing Center, she is directly involved with the handling and monitoring of at least half the exams the office administers. This is not an easy task. Not only does she have to deal with (at times) irrate students, but she also has had to work closely with an office that is far removed from her location. She does this quite well. As proof of her support, the office was able to administer successfully over 1100 exams during Fall semester, 1994. We couldn't have done it without her cooperation and extreme efforts.

Student

Richard Spomer, Social Work

From Richard's arrival on campus, he has put great effort into making this campus a better place for students with disabilities. As he puts it, he has a mission of "educating the educated." His support of the office in numerous ways has also helped to promote the "quality" of the environment for students with disabilities. He has great plans as he accomplishes his mission and if only one-tenth of his ideas bear fruit, he will have made significant contributions to the environment on behalf of students with disabilities.

Volunteer

Chuck Hays, Loveland community

Chuck has read for our office for the past four years. He reads very technical books and has completed every assignment given him or that he took. His expertise in understanding technical vocabulary (especially in pronounciation) has been invaluable to our being able to provide certain textbooks on tape for students who otherwise would have no access to such material.
