CSU Bookstore

One of the major accommodations needed for students with disabilities is alternative text. While many textbooks have been and continue to be recorded on tape by Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic, it is impossible for us to get all books needed by students through this organization. As a result, RDS supplements this service through a volunteer reader/taper pool and our Alternative Text Services. In order to be successful with this service, however, copies of textbooks are needed. Books are also needed for the sign language interpreters to become familiar with course material. Since these are short time uses for these books, it is ineffective for RDS to actually purchase all these books and then have them accumulate unused. The CSU Bookstore works cooperative with RDS to ensure we have access to copies of textbooks without causing undue hardship financially on our meager budget. They also have the added advantage of reselling a book once we are finished with it. This alone would be sufficient to recognize their efforts but it doesn't stop there. To have such a system and process work, it requires not only cooperative and friendly policies but cooperative and friendly staff. And RDS has been blessed with a great working relationship between our respective staffs. Currently, Fran Wilson is the liaison between the bookstore and RDS. She, like those in the past, regularly go the extra mile in making sure we have the books we need. For example, last year Fran initiated a new and simpler system to implement our arrangements with the bookstore and Margaret Parks has been instrumental in making sure we have booklists so students could check their books at RDS. Without the support of the bookstore and its personnel like Fran and Margaret and those before them, providing the needed accommodation of alternative text would be next to impossible. These are efforts that truly are "outstanding" as well as greatly appreciated.

Faculty

Bill Reinke, English

Bill Reinke is an instructor for Creative Writing. Bill has Amy and Kerri in his class. He has been very good about getting me extra material for class before they need it. He also was able to lend me his copies of the books before the semester started so I could convert them into Alternative Text. Bill Reinke, as an instructor for Creative Writing, has demonstrated his willingness to ensure that students in his class have an equal opportunity to learn and to participate. This semester he has had two students with visual impairments. Both have required accommodations that have needed lots of planning and cooperation in order to have written material translated into a usable form for these students. Mr. Reinke has been exceptional about getting the extra material for class to RDS for conversion before the material has been needed so the students would have the material in a timely manner. Mr. Reinke has also lent copies of the books used in class prior to the beginning of the semester so that RDS could convert the print material into a more usable format. His cooperation and partnership with RDS exemplifies the efforts of an instructor that truly believes in equal opportunity in the classroom.

Staff

John Beckett, Housing/Food Services

John is a supervisor in Edwards Hall kitchen and has a woman who is deaf in his employ. John has taken the time to learn sign language in order to facilitiate communication as well as increase the awareness of co-workers and fellow staff. He goes extra lengths to participate in educational opportunities to further his understanding and enhance everyone's cohesion. Communication within a team is a hard enough task. It is usually up to the leader of the team to make sure everyone is on the same page at the same time. Individual communication styles often complicate the process and it takes strong commitment on behalf of the leader, as well as the rest of the team, to ensure everyone knows as much as possible about the most important issues. As a supervisor with an employee who is deaf, John Beckett has demonstrated commitment to making the working environment as welcoming and accessible as possible. He has independently taken the time to learn sign language to facilitate communication and has encouraged an increase in the level of awareness among co-workers and fellow staff of the unique communication methods associated with deafness. In addition, he has sought out, under his own self-initiative, additional educational opportunities to further his understanding of deafness and communication to enhance team cohesion. These efforts are truly "outstanding" and deserve recognition as well as appreciation.

Student

Sarah Gales, Animal Science major

Sarah has proven invaluable as an advocate for students with disabilities. She is always willing to participate in activities that promote the quality of life as it concerns people with disabilities. Among her outstanding efforts are her participation on the Committee for Disabled Students and as a participant on the CSU Web Access Committee. Not only has she made decisions to improve the accessibility of campus to all students, she has also spent many hours testing individual web pages to ensure their accessibility to screen readers. She has willing spoken in classes and in general is a very reliable person to call on when unique perspective as a person who is sight limited is needed. Once she graduates, she will be missed but the next community to be graced with her presense will surely be inheriting a gem of uncomparable worth.

Volunteer

Nicki Rutt

Nicki has been a volunteer with RDS since 1994. One of our students, Sarah, absolutely loves Nicki. She always requests Nicki to read for her. This last semester Nicki read every week in person for Sarah. She is flexible and willing to read just about anything. We are very grateful to have such an effective and cooperative veteran community member on our list.

--CSU Staff

Carol Moth, Environmental Health

Carol has been a volunteer since 1992, one of our long standing volunteers. She has been one of our most reliable volunteer over the years. Carol will read those great books that nobody wants to read, such as Industrial Safety and Grazing Management. She always stays ahead of her students' schedule and has consistently produced great tapes. Carol is an shining example of an outstanding volunteer.

--CSU Student

Ryan Stewart, Mechanical Engineering major

Ryan has been a volunteer for only 2 years but has been most valuable with his contributions. His mechanical engineering major keeps him busy enough. Yet he still finds time to read for us. He has been most helpful with reading supplemental matters for classes and he is currently reading for a student this semester in honors classes.
