October Psychology Newsletter
From the Chair:
Through the summer faculty and staff have been very busy and were successful in receiving over $2 million in new grants and awards. For the last 15 years the department of Psychology here at Colorado State University has been in the top 100 (out of over 650) Psychology departments in receiving grant funded awards from the federal government as found in the NSF report http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/rdexpenditures/. We are currently ranked 93, however I expect that our current level of funding at almost $5 million will move us into the top fifty programs in the next annual report. With only 25 current faculty members this is an extraordinary achievement and speaks to the strength of our faculty’s research. This extraordinary faculty, graduate students and staff will be moving to a new building in July of 2010 which is currently under construction just south of the Clark building. This building will house both the Department of Psychology and the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, along with classrooms and laboratories. Please visit our website for an ongoing view of the progress in this building. Exciting things continue to happen here in the department even through these difficult fiscal times.

Advising News
There are currently 975 undergraduate majors in psychology. 920 have psychology as their primary major; the remaining 55 have psychology listed as their secondary major. As an advising staff, we work diligently to make sure students are in the right major. A total of 105 students changed from psychology to another major in summer and fall terms. 122 students, however, found psychology to be their academic home and change their majors into psychology during this same timeframe.
In the month of October, the advising staff completed instructing the PSY 192 Psychology Freshman Seminar. Nearly 180 students were enrolled in the three sections of this class. Individual advising meetings were held with each of these students in an effort to assess the fit of psychology as a major, review four year plans, and discuss transition to CSU.

Col. Cheri A. Provancha will take command of Letterkenny Army Depot on Friday. While commanding the Stryker Brigade support battalion in Iraq, she was quoted twice in the Washington Post about women's role in the military: -- In May 2005 -- "The Army has to understand the regulation that says women can't be placed in direct fire situations is archaic and not attainable." -- In December 2006 -- "In the 1980s when a male soldier walks in the door, the expectation is they are competent. The woman on the other hand, it was 'I've got to see what you have before I give you that level of confidence.' Now when I walk in the door, I feel like the guys do." Most recently, Provancha completed an assignment as the assistant chief of staff, support operations in the 3rd Sustainment Command in Fort Knox, Ky. Her section was in charge of distributing absentee ballots in October 2008, and Provancha was photographed in Balad with California Secretary of State Debra Bowen to promote absentee voting by military personnel. As a distinguished military graduate, she was commissioned as a lieutenant of ordnance in 1984 from Colorado State University. Her awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, United Nations Medal-Haiti and the Combat Action Badge during Operation Iraqi Freedom III. The $11.6 million complex will house the depot's missile certification and repair capability for Patriot PAC 2 and HAWK missiles. The missile work is being relocated from Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, Texas, as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure.
