Department Newsletters
November News
Welcome from the Department of Psychology,
If you are keeping up with us from afar, you'll notice that there are a lot of changes taking place. We are nicely settled in our beautiful new building. I am taking over as department chair, succeeding Dr. Ernie Chavez, who stepped down after 13 years of tremendous service to the department and university. The department is in a much better place for all of Ernie's efforts. As you'll see elsewhere in the newsletter, Ernie remains active on campus.
We also have added a new member to our administrative staff in Kelly Calkins, who previously worked in the Dean's office and several other departments on campus. We are also in the process of hiring a half-time staff member to work principally on pre- and post-grant budgets.
One of the most exciting developments is that we are hiring! After no new hires in three years, we added Dr. Jan Cleveland to the faculty this fall, and we are in the midst of hiring three new faculty members in Counseling, Social, and Cognitive. The hire in the first two positions will likely have strong interests in health-related research, increasing our core capacity in that domain.
I invite you to read through the newsletter and see all the exciting developments in Psychology. Please contact me if I can provide any other information you may need.

ADVISING NEWS
The undergraduate advising team—Cassidy McLaren, Heather Matthews, and Dr. Vicki Volbrecht—are working with over 1,000
psychology majors this fall! Besides managing days full of student appointments, they also created a new group advising system
for new first year students this year, to ensure face-to-face interaction with each individual student in their first 8 weeks of
classes. New student success research and attention in colleges and universities nation-wide has been devoted to
sophomore students in regards to their experiences with academics, motivation, interpersonal interactions, and career
development. To keep up with the trend, the psychology department advisors have developed a workshop for sophomores in an
attempt to offer time for reflection, goal setting, and the creation of an action plan for meeting those aims.
Speaking of staying on top of trends, the advising office now uses Facebook and Twitter for keeping in touch with students! Anyone can find us and like/follow us by searching the following: Facebook – Psychology Advising at Colorado State University; Twitter – PsyCSUAdvising.
