March Psychology Newsletter
From the Chair:
The department continues to grow with two new faculty hired for the coming academic year (2008-2009). Dr. Michael Steger who received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2005 and has held an appointment at the University of Louisville the last three years will be joining the faculty and the Counseling program. Justin Lehmiller who is expected to receive his Ph.D. from Purdue University this summer will also join the faculty and the Applied Social program. These two hires give us the largest number of faculty in the history of the Psychology department here at Colorado State University, and are evidence of the continued growth and quality of our department.
The IO graduate students hosted the 29th annual IOOB (Industrial-Organizational Organizational-Behavior) Conference in Denver on March 14th through 16th. The conference entitled: “Shifting the Paradigm: Work in the 21st Century,” was attended by 115 participants from all over the United States...including Hawaii. There were 4 keynote speakers (one from Germany), 12 workshop presenters, and 19 sponsoring organizations. The IO graduate students deserve congratulations on all the work involved in organizing and hosting this conference. The following students were on the IOOB planning committee; Natalie Wolfson, Paige Gardner, Zachary Steiner, Christa Palmer, Stefanie Putter, Alex Rechlin, Jenny Pitts, Martin Lanik, Brian Hurd, Josh Liff, Lauren Duarte, Anne Hansen, and Erin Crane.
Dr. George Thornton will be retiring at the end of this academic year in May. Dr. Thornton joined the department in 1966 and along with Dr. Jack Hautaluoma developed and nurtured our Industrial Organizational Psychology program over the last 42 years. Dr. Thornton is also an international expert on Assessment Centers and two years ago received the Society of Industrial Organizational Psychology’s achievement award. Join me in wishing Dr. Thornton well and in honoring him for his many achievements and contributions to our department.
Dr. Thornton is the eleventh faculty member to retire while I have been chair of the department. We have lost well over 400 years of accumulated service and experience with the retirement of these important figures in our department and although we have done an excellent job of hiring exceptional new faculty we will never replace these individuals. We are an organization made up of individuals who have committed their lives to education and to the training of students and these individuals dedicated most of their working hours to CSU and the Psychology department. We have all been honored to know them.
