Fieldwork is the supervised opportunity for students to gain graded practical
experience functioning in a therapeutic role in occupational therapy (OT) environments.
At Colorado State University, fieldwork is divided into two sections: Level I and Level II Fieldwork. Level I Fieldwork begins early the first year and continues throughout the
second year of the professional program. Registered occupational therapists serve as
role models and supervisors in fieldwork. Students provide limited evaluations and services
to clients in a therapeutic setting. Students and supervisors negotiate assignments to
reflect client needs and opportunities available in that setting. Level II Fieldwork is normally
a full-time commitment for six months following the successful completion of the academic professional program. An OT intern works in a setting with clients providing the full scope
of OT services ranging from evaluations, intervention planning, service provision, discharge planning and representing the OT perspective on an interdisciplinary team. The intern is expected to have entry-level competence upon completion of the Level II Fieldwork. The
student is eligible for the National Board of Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Examination after successful completion of academic, Level II fieldwork and if Masters
student, the written comprehensive exam or research requirements.
