Name: Jennifer "Jan" Iron
Department: Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station
Official Title/Role: IT Professional III
Time at CSU: 22 years
Notable awards/accomplishments: Margaret B. Hazaleus Award
What do you most enjoy about your job/role?
I love the variety of things that I do. Technology is always changing, and I like the challenges that come with that. I appreciate the people I work for and with very much. I appreciate the opportunities that I get of working with my Native American people. With my family, we also enjoy sharing our culture with others
What professional accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
It is not my way to express pride in my own accomplishments.
Do/Did you have a Mentor? If so, what influence did your Mentor have on your career/goals and life?
I have had many mentors throughout my life who have influenced my life today. First, there is my mother. She has always been a hard worker all her life. The things she taught us at a young age are what I live by to this day. These include: getting to work early or on-time, having and showing respect for all, and working hard for what you want in life each and every day. I had great teachers in high school that believed in me and encouraged me to continue my education. During and after college, I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by great mentors like Harriet Sykes, Frank Johnson, Helen McHugh, Maryann Sanchez, Pat Downer, Carolyn Fiscus, Linda Wardlow, Maria Jones, Roe Bubar, Irene Vernon, Lee Sommers, Ty Smith, Becky Trentlage, Phil Minthorn, Peter Jacobs, Gayle Adams and many others - too many to name. These are all people of honor and dignity. They are hard-working people with big hearts and open minds. They are people who give of themselves for the betterment of other people and their communities. I have been very blessed!
Name: Mohammed Hirchi
Department: Foreign Languages and Literatures
Official Title/Role: Assistant Professor
Time at CSU: 8 years
What do you most enjoy about your job/role?
I enjoy working with domestic and international students in class and outside of class to help them appreciate the languages and cultures of the Arab world and Africa. Being a professor allows me to keep learning new things through contact with students as well as through research, conferences and travel.
What professional accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
With encouragement from the Dept. of Foreign Languages & Literatures, the College of Liberal Arts, International Programs and the Provost’s office, we were able to create a program in Arabic that had been listed in the catalogue for years but never existed in reality. This summer I’m taking the first group of students to study abroad Morocco. Starting this fall I’ll be working on a two-year U.S. Department of Education grant to enhance Arabic and the “Middle East and North African Studies Option” in International Studies.
Do/Did you have a Mentor? If so, what influence did your Mentor have on your career/goals and life?
Many people have influenced me in positive ways. My parents and parents-in-law showed me how to have convictions but still be open-minded. My older brothers (we are 9 kids in my family) encouraged me to get a college education. My professors at Indiana University helped me develop a wide variety of interests, so I believe in interdisciplinary. Here at CSU I have been mentored by my department chairs and many great colleagues. My wife Mary Vogl and our children Latifah and Tariq motivate me to do my best.
