Mark Miller,Saxophone |
Mark comes from a musical family and began studying the saxophone in 4th grade. He is currently pursuing his Music Education degree at CSU. What do you like most about the CSU Music Department? " It holds a tight family of students that are all there to make the best music that they can while remembering why we make music; to have fun by ourselves and with our friends." Tell us about your upcoming Jazz Classics Concert. "We'll be playing music from composers that were important figures in jazz history. You will recognize many of the pieces, but they will be modern arrangements of classics and versions of tunes that are more complex and difficult than the standard swing band music than most people recognize, which Professor Sommer does an excellent job of selecting to help us all improve as musicians." Chue Vue, Viola |
What do you like most about the CSU Music program? "The faculty. Their knowledge and commitment to life-long learning is inspiring." Why do you enjoy playing in the Symphony? "Mr. Kenney constantly reminds us that the music on our stands is the same music that is on the stands of professional orchestras around the world. It's a challenging experience!" Chue began his college career as a Business major, but his love of music drew him to Music Education; he plans to teach elementary music or high school orchestra upon graduating. Aside from being an active violist in CSU string ensembles, Chue is involved in campus life. He served as a Resident Assistant, participated in the first Men's Project - a program to prevent sexual assault, and works as a GUIDE (Gaining Understanding through Involvement, Diversity and Education) paraprofessional for Housing and Dining Services. |
Shilo Stroman, Percussion |
What do you like most about the CSU Music program? "This is an exciting time to be a part of the music department at CSU! With new faculty members, equipment, and facilities, the department is achieving a higher level of excellence all the time. It is thrilling to work with experts like Eric Hollenbeck and Peter Sommer." Why do you enjoy playing in the Wind Ensemble? "I love performing great music with my friends. In January, the Wind Ensemble will have the honor of performing at the Colorado Music Educators Association convention. I played with them in 1997 when they performed at this convention, and I can really see the tremendous growth and improvement of the ensemble within the last ten years, under the direction of Steven Moore." Shilo Stroman, a second year graduate student in percussion performance, earned a B.M. in Percussion Performance from Colorado State in 2001 and is current director of percussion at Fossil Ridge High School and an in-demand clinician. His private students have been selected to numerous All-State and Regional Honor Ensembles and many have gone on to become successful college music majors. He performs throughout Northern Colorado with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fort Collins Symphony and the Cheyenne Symphony. He maintains an active freelance career in jazz, rock and salsa performing on drumset, vibraphone and bass guitar. |
