Undergraduate Study

The Department has a strong commitment to undergraduate education and offers:

- a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in French, German and Spanish, as well as

- a Bachelor of Arts degree with Teacher Licensure in French, German and Spanish.

 

Undergraduate minors are offered in French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Basic first and second year courses may also be taken in American Sign Language, Chinese, Italian, Latin, Russian.

The programs in foreign languages emphasize oral and written proficiency and aim to develop knowledge of the culture and the literature, and to promote the critical and analytical skills requisite to an understanding of their relationships.

Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements

Majors in French, German, or Spanish must choose Concentration I, which requires a minimum of 10 courses (30 credits) above second year, or Concentration II, which requires a minimum of 9 courses in the major language plus 8-12 credits in any other language (35-39 credits). Checklist

400-level Literature course--choose one of the following:

L 443, L445, L449 (S), L450, L452, L453, L454 orL460 (F)
400-level Culture course--choose one of the following:
L 433A or B (F), L 434 (G), L 436 or L 437 (S)

9 Credits at 300- or 400-level:
1.

a. French and German: 6 upper division credits.

b. Spanish: 6 upper division credits (of which 3 cr. must be 400 level).

2. Pick a, b, c, or d

Choose either Concentration I or II to complete the requirements.

a. 400-level FLL course (see check list in office)

b. LGEN 465 A-C (English-taught film course) with Advisor approval

c. 400-level Non-L course with Advisor approval (cannot double count with department history requirement - see details on check list in office)

d. 8-12 credits in any other single foreign language, including lower-division course credit (not placement credit) You CANNOT count credit for a language in which you opt to 2nd major or have a minor!

Bachelor of Arts Degree WITH Teacher Licensure Requirements

Majors with the French, German, or Spanish concentration AND Teacher Licensure will have to take 12 courses (36 credits) in order to satisfy the Foreign Language component of the Teacher Licensure. Checklist

Minor in French, German, Japanese, Spanish

Minors in French, German, Japanese or Spanish must complete a minimum of 21 credits in the language of the minor, of which 15 credits must be in upper division courses. To earn a minor in French, German, or Spanish the student must take at least one course in literature or civilization and at least one 400-level course. Students minoring in Japanese must complete a minimum of 21 credits of which 12 are in upper division courses. 

 

Placement. Students who have had prior training in a language and who desire to take classes or to major in that language should sit for a Placement Examination to determine the appropriate level of entry into the program. Placement examinations are given on a walk-in basis during open hours in the Language Laboratory and need not be scheduled in advance.
